Briochebane is a young gold dragon, the size of a large dog, raised in secret by the Eldwythe baker Phil Flowerforge from an egg Phil stole as a brigand [11]. Uncle Nibblecheek kept him entranced in the Candy Cottage until Terry woke him with one of Phil’s brioche buns [3][37]. The Egg did not react to him, and the DM said that Sevryn’s magic “may have misfired and accidentally sent you on the path to a golden dragon” [4][12]. He travelled briefly with the party, then went off with Phil after the Aurelian ambush of session 15 and has not been seen since.

Overview

Briochebane, Brioche for short, is a young dragon, “the size of a large dog”, with gold scales and a little red [3][10]. He was raised by Phil Flowerforge, the dwarf baker of Eldwythe, from an egg Phil escaped with on his last heist as a brigand; Phil’s pastries are toasted with the dragon’s fire [11]. He is not the dragon the party’s Egg quest is after: the Egg did not react to him, and the DM said Sevryn’s magic may have sent them to the wrong dragon [4][12]. Who laid the egg is not known.

Appearance and demeanour

A dragon the size of a large dog, “more gold than red”, with “a little bit of red in his scales” [3][10]. Phil first described him as “a weird mixture of reddish scales” [13]. While entranced his eyes are cloudy and white and he lies breathing calmly by the fire; free, he is eager and friendly, fond of cinnamon rolls and brioche buns [3][14][15][16]. Phil says he is “crusty on the outside but soft on the inside” [17].

Abilities as played

  • Fire. Phil toasts his pastries with the dragon’s fire [11].
  • Breath. In session 14 he flew up behind Nibblecheek and breathed on him: 23 damage, halved by a 20 on the Dexterity save [6]. On a later turn the DM tried to recharge the breath, rolled a 2, and gave him two claw attacks instead, both hits [18].
  • Claws. In session 15 he clawed an archer twice, for 14 and 6 [19]. He used no breath that session.
  • Flight. He flies, quickly, and fights beside the party [20][21].

Disposition towards the party

Friendly and trusting: he follows Terry, fights Nibblecheek beside them, and agrees to the party’s plans with “I trust your judgment” [27][18][28].

History in the campaign

Session 12: Eldwythe and the Candy Cottage

Following a cinnamon roll from the fire at Edith’s confectionery, Caelumn pressed the baker Phil, who confessed that his last heist as a brigand had left him with a dragon egg, now a dragon he calls Briochebane and keeps behind closed doors [11]. It had outgrown the house, had not been back for a couple of days, and Phil feared it had started the fire [11]. He asked the party to find it in the woods east of town for 100 gold, called it “a weird mixture of reddish scales”, and gave them cinnamon rolls, its favourite, to coax it home [29][13][16].

Session 13: Bubba Walker and the Gummy Sarcophagus

Brioche does not appear. Freed from his cage in the Candy Cottage, the bubblegum halfling told Terry that Brioche is “Uncle Nibblecheek’s new assistant”, probably in the kitchen, kept on a short leash like Bubba [2].

Session 14: The Gummy Mummy and Aurelian Eldwythe

Terry’s owl saw a dragon the size of a large dog lying on Nibblecheek’s oven, its eyes cloudy and white [3]. The Egg did not react when Terry passed it by, and a Perception check showed the scales to be more gold than red [30]. A brioche bun from Phil’s bakery broke the trance, and the dragon followed Terry [26]. In the fight it breathed on Nibblecheek from behind and later clawed him twice [6][18]. Leaving with it, the DM said Sevryn’s magic “may have misfired and accidentally sent you on the path to a golden dragon” [12]. With Aurelians holding Eldwythe, the party told Brioche to wait or come to Sevryn, and he said he trusted them [31].

Session 15: The Death of Ruin and Althea Joins

Brioche was in the camp when the Aurelian patrol came; after Althea’s Bless he flew up and clawed an archer for 14 and 6, and Hugo finished it [32][8]. Phil, who had followed the patrol with a smoke bomb, led the party into the sewers and said that he and Brioche would head for Arcanthys, Velkris or perhaps Wyrmbough, meeting Brioche at an agreed spot [33][34]. Terry asked whether the promised reward for Brioche was still owed; Hugo said it was, but that Phil’s help was reward enough [35].

Status

As of session 23. Alive and off-screen, with Phil, who said they would head for Arcanthys, Velkris or perhaps Wyrmbough [36]. He has not been mentioned in play since session 15.
