Bobby is the deer familiar Mike summoned at the party’s beach camp after the landfall in session 18: out of nothing a deer appeared, “my friend, Bobby”, who had been kept in a pocket dimension during the voyage and was set to feed the fire and help keep watch overnight [3]. It is his only scene. Mike was beheaded by Glenn the next morning [5], and what became of Bobby is unresolved.
Overview
Bobby is Mike’s familiar, a deer, summoned with Find Familiar at the party’s camp on the landfall beach before the long rest on the night of 843-03-30 [3]. Mike explained that Bobby had been in a pocket dimension through the sea voyage, because it had not been a convenient time to bring him out [1]. The name is Mike’s. The recap files Bobby as a fey creature; the table said only “deer”.
Appearance and demeanour
A deer, with no further description. He appears at a snap of Mike’s fingers, out of nothing [1]. Mike treats him as a friend, introducing him twice in a breath: “This is Bobby. This is Bobby.” [2].
Abilities as played
None tested. Bobby was tasked to feed the fire while the party slept and to help keep watch [2]. The night passed badly but without incident, and the deer is not mentioned again [4].
Relationships
- Mike: his summoner, who died the morning after the summon [5].
- The party: Mike introduced him to the others, none of whom is recorded speaking to him.
History in the campaign
Session 18: The Wyrm Falls, the Catfish Escapes, and Mike Dies on the Road
Main article: Session 18
On the beach after the swim from the wrecked skiff, Mike said he was off to bed and snapped his fingers, and a deer appeared from nothing: “this is my friend, Bobby”, his Find Familiar, who had been in a pocket dimension while the party was on the water [1]. Bobby was to “feed the fire while we’re sleeping” and “help keep watch” [2]. The party slept badly but undisturbed [4]. Bobby is not mentioned again. Next morning Mike cast Message in front of an Aurelian patrol and was beheaded by Glenn [6][5].
Status
As of session 23. Unknown. Mike is dead, and the deer is not mentioned again; whether the familiar vanished with its caster, stayed at the camp or went elsewhere has not been ruled. A question for the DM.
