Voidforged
Voidforged is the canonical race-name of Hugo’s body-type — first stated on-transcript in session 17, when the DM clarified out-of-character to a new player joining the table: “oh yeah by the way Ash so just so you know Hugo is playing something called a void forged that don’t need to breathe but for all intents and purposes I look completely… human, more or less” [8]. The race is the post-rewrite body type of the surviving Project Veilbreak subjects — a body that does not need to breathe, has glowing veins under the skin, faintly glowing eyes, and luminous blue blood that “acts like a living conduit” storing “stress, poison, pain, violence” [4], L1483). Previously the campaign’s working term was “Project Veilbreak survivor” or “Void-Touched”. Voidforged is now canon; the older terms remain as descriptive shorthand. Hugo is the only on-screen Voidforged; Bella is the only other named survivor [13].
Overview
Voidforged is the canonical name for Hugo’s race — the body-type that resulted from the cellular-rewrite phase of Project Veilbreak, the Ascendancy’s experimental candidate program that produced seven surviving subjects [7]; see Project Veilbreak for the full programme profile). The race-name was first stated on-transcript in session 17, when the DM, talking out-of-character to Ash (the new player joining the table), set up the breath-hold bet by clarifying Hugo’s relevant biology:
“oh yeah by the way Ash so just so you know Hugo is playing something called a void forged that don’t need to breathe but for all intents and purposes I look completely… human, more or less” — Nick (DM), [8]
Before s17 the recap canon used “Project Veilbreak survivor” or “Void-Touched” as descriptive shorthand. “Voidforged” is now the binding race-name; older terms remain as descriptive references.
Known traits
The campaign has revealed the following Voidforged traits through Hugo’s body across the campaign and especially in session 17:
- Does not need to breathe [1]. Mechanically exploited in the s17 breath-hold bet that tricked Mike into a contract pledge. Hugo notes in passing: “I do not need to breathe so I can you know in normal things I might breathe to appear more human” [9].
- Passes for human in default presentation [8]. Six foot, early twenties, palish skin with slightly blue-tinted visible veins [3].
- Glowing veins under the skin — visible on a closer look. Mike’s Investigation 15 [4] returned: “you see that there are slight glowing veins underneath his skin. Almost like something’s coursing through his veins instead of blood.”
- Faintly glowing eyes — visible at conversational distance under close inspection [4].
- Greyish-pale skin — Mike’s Investigation called it “rather grayish. More pale-ish” [4].
- Luminous blue blood — Hugo cuts his palm in s17 to provide a sample for Mike’s Detect Magic; the blood is luminous blue [5].
- Blood as a “living conduit” — per the DM’s narration of the blood-vision ritual at [6]: “the magic is not sitting on Hugo. It’s almost like it’s built into him. His blood is acting like a living conduit. It stores stress, poison, pain, violence. And then it feeds that pressure back into his body.” The blood is not itself magical in the Detect-Magic sense (Mike: “Your blood, for lack of a better word. Didn’t sense to be magical”, [10] but it carries a sealed-in record of the rewrite chamber that ritual investigation can surface as a vision.
The blood-vision and the chamber
Mike’s Detect Magic ritual on Hugo’s blood vial [6] produced concrete imagery of the place where the Voidforged were made:
“you see flashes of iron restraints, dark glass and a chamber with no clean air. You see a body surviving things that it shouldn’t survive.” — Nick (DM), [6]
Hugo’s side of the ritual triggered a half-second residual mind-control signal — the campaign’s first cross-source confirmation that the Ascendancy’s “leash” is still operationally active even on the surviving subjects who have been on operational deployment for years:
“somewhere in the back of your mind, a voice… It almost dies before forming the words, but you swear you hear the word, comply.” — Nick (DM), [11]
The DM confirmed in the same scene [12] that the imagery matches both what The Black Mask told Hugo in s4 and the Titan environment in s7 — three sources, one chamber.
Population
Hugo is the only on-screen Voidforged. The recording at [7] specified that seven candidates survived the four-phase Project Veilbreak rewrite — the surviving cohort is therefore at most seven, of which Hugo is the one in active campaign play. Bella is the only other named survivor [13]; Hugo recognised her name immediately when The Black Mask mentioned her.
Whether Voidforged is the race-name only of the post-rewrite Project Veilbreak survivors (i.e. the rewrite created them) or whether Voidforged is a pre-existing lineage that the Project recruited from is not stated in transcript. The pragmatic reading from s17’s framing — Hugo is one of “a few survivors” of “some form of experiment” — is consistent with both possibilities. The DM has not pinned it down.
Relationship to other “blue blood” species in s17
The s17 Rimeclaw Skulker encounter introduced water wolves with luminous purplish-blue blood [14]. The player table immediately compared the colour to Hugo’s Voidforged blood; Steven [15]: “Hey, this guy is real like you. I blew some people say that purple is just a darker shade of blue.” The DM has not confirmed any genealogical link between the water wolves and the Voidforged — the visual echo is canonical, the causation is open. A separate pass-1-extraction note flags the s17 in-fiction biology overlap between Mike (a Vedalken, blue-skinned) and Hugo (Voidforged, blue-veined) as thematic but distinct races per the DM’s clarification.
