Ruin — Inventory at Death
Inventory for Ruin (Mordane’s second character) at his death in session 15. A tiefling warlock with a healing-type subclass; sent to the party in s10 via Sevryn’s sealed letter at Harvo’s pyre. Killed in s15 by the Aurelian chain-master in a scripted execution - chain wrapped around his neck and pulled with such force that his neck snapped and his head was pulled off [5]. No save was offered. Body not recovered. (The s15 chain-master is a separate Aurelian elite from the s10 Aurelian Paladin.)
Equipment at time of death
- Standard warlock kit — focus, arcane components, light armour.
- Hand crossbow / dagger — for melee fallback.
- Arcane focus — implicit.
Spells / class features
- Witch Bolt (post-2024 buff: subsequent rounds deal lightning damage even on initial miss; [1] confirmed).
- Hellish Rebuke (Tiefling Infernal Legacy free use at 1st; [2] ruling: free use is at 1st level, regular spell slots upcast). Notable [3]: 21 damage on Bubba.
- Eldritch Blast (cantrip) — primary ranged damage.
- Sacred Flame (cantrip).
- Hex (used s13 + s14 + s15).
- Identify — used s10 (Aurelian Plate), s11 (potion testing), s13 (+1 Greataxe), s14 (Hat of Disguise foreshadow).
- Detect Magic ritual.
- Subclass healing (warlock-with-healing-subclass; specific patron not enumerated). Used to heal party members repeatedly: s10 (Vasquez 11 HP), s11 (Caelumn 5 HP via potion-pour during airlift), s13 (Vasquez 6 HP).
Items at time of death
- 20gp + 1 dozen cinnamon rolls (from Phil’s private side-deal s12) — Ruin negotiated this privately with Phil Flowerforge in exchange for not snitching about the dragon. Lost at his death.
- Healing potions carried for personal use.
- Personal coin from per-character splits (treasure split policy started [4] at Ruin’s request).
Items he interacted with extensively
- Identify casts — Ruin became the party’s primary item-identifier post-Harvo’s death (Harvo had been the alchemist-supplies / Identify resource).
- Stolen items — Ruin had a pattern of casual theft: tried to steal a red potion at Starpoint Secrets s11 (failed; doubled the prices); stole 3 apples from the Felds’ family (paid 5 cp by Caelumn after the fact); private deal with Phil for 20gp not to snitch.
Death
Killed in s15 by an Aurelian elite chain-master in a scripted execution at the party’s clearing outside Eldwythe:
“A chain shoots out and hits Ruin around the neck as he pulls with such force that his neck snaps and pulls his head off.” — DM, [5]
This was a scripted execution. No save was offered; no damage rolls. The DM noted out-of-character that the death was scripted because Mordane (Ruin’s previous player) had been removed from the table between sessions 14 and 15, and his replacement Maliwana was joining s15 with a new character — Althea Stormsoro. Ruin was being retired in-fiction.
His body was not recovered. The party fled into the Eldwythe sewers under Phil Flowerforge’s smoke bomb. No funeral rite was held. The Aurelian chain-master likely retained or discarded the body. Phil’s private 20gp + cinnamon rolls and any other personal gear were lost with the body.
Ruin had been a member of the party for five sessions (s10-s15).
