Project Veilbreak
Project Veilbreak is the experimental candidate-rewrite programme run by The Ascendancy that produced Hugo and six other surviving “subjects”. It is documented entirely through one in-fiction artefact: a recording, narrated by the Project Veilbreak doctor, played to Hugo in session 4 by The Black Mask during the Onyx Ring of Barbed Hooks pact negotiation [1]. The recording describes 140,000 candidates, an injection of a redacted compound (a viscous-fluid blood replacement) that killed 50% within 24 hours, cellular-level biological rewrite of survivors, and two rounds of one-against-one-hundred arena combat that left seven candidates alive. Hugo’s pre-experiment given name was revealed by the Mask in the same session as Corvin [5]. Bella is the only other survivor named on-screen [4]. The project is the structural backstory of Hugo’s personal arc and the campaign’s largest off-screen Hugo-antagonist reservoir.

Project Veilbreak is the in-fiction name for The Ascendancy’s candidate-rewrite programme. It predates the campaign and is documented entirely through one in-fiction artefact: a recording, narrated in the clinical voice of the Project Veilbreak doctor, played to Hugo in session 4 by The Black Mask during the negotiation that produced the Onyx Ring of Barbed Hooks pact [1]. The recording describes a four-phase programme that began with 140,000 candidates and ended with seven surviving “subjects”. Hugo is the only one of those seven active in the campaign timeline. His pre-experiment given name was Corvin, revealed in the same session by the Black Mask using it casually mid-negotiation [5]. Bella is the only other survivor named on-screen.
The project is, in canon, finished — the survivors have been produced and dispersed. In the campaign timeline it functions as Hugo’s backstory and as the structural premise of his pact, his handler (The Wraith), and his “leash”. Recognition of the project’s signature has appeared in two non-Hugo, non-Mask sources: Maelis Dirn in s6 (“I see the project’s work on you”, L2538) and the Titan in s7, who looked at Hugo before disappearing. Maelis Dirn recognized Project Veilbreak-style alteration, but her exact relationship to the Ascendancy is unconfirmed. The Titan’s full origin remains uncertain. The Ascendancy treats the surviving subjects as ongoing operational assets.
Origins
The recording is the only piece of Ascendancy-internal documentation the party has been exposed to. (The doctor it credits as narrator — transcript-rendered as “Dr Flem Josenge” — is not yet confirmed by the DM as the canonical name; the figure is real, the string-of-syllables that names him at sign-off may be a Whisper artefact or a table joke.) It exists on an altered sending stone in The Black Mask’s possession — itself a remarkable fact, since the Mask is a private devil with no apparent operational stake in the Ascendancy. The Mask’s possession of the recording, combined with his stated rule that “we cannot lie” [16], is the strongest evidence the project is real.
The recording was played in session 4 in a black-void pocket realm into which the Mask had transported Hugo, Caelumn, and Terry from The Still Current Inn in Mirestrand. Time was frozen in the surrounding world during the audience.
The recording
The s4 recording opens “Log 1. The first trial. The Arena of Calling. Project Veilbreak is underway” [17]. At first reading the DM stumbled on the candidate count (“All 1,040 — all 140,000 candidates”) before re-reading the line cleanly at L1322. The canonical figure is 140,000.
The recording’s full content describes a four-phase programme:
- Phase 1 — induction. 140,000 candidates were collected from “a range of backgrounds” and injected with a redacted compound. The compound is a viscous-fluid blood replacement. Approximately 50% of candidates died within the first 24 hours.
- Phase 2 — biological rewrite. Survivors had their biology rewritten at the cellular level. The mechanism is unspecified in the recording; the visible effect is described as the surviving candidates “glow with a shimmering light coming from the viscous fluid that has replaced their blood”.
- Phase 3 — arena trials. Two rounds of one-against-one-hundred arena combat (called “the Arena of Calling”). The recording does not describe the rule set or the duration. “Repeated twice, leaving a mere total of 7 candidates.”
- Phase 4 — review and assignment. The seven surviving candidates were placed back in their enclosure while the Project doctor and “my fellow colleagues” reviewed footage of the arena combats to scout the most promising. The recording ends with the sign-off “Dr Flem Josenge.” before cutting short. The “lead doctor” referenced by the Black Mask in s12 is presumed to be Dr Flem Josenge, unless later clarified.
The recording is the only documented narration. Whether the seven were assigned to fixed handlers, deployed as a unit, or scattered, is not specified by the recording itself. Hugo’s case (Wraith handler, individual deployment, embedded as an Umbrafall-resident operative for years before the campaign) suggests scattered deployment with handler-level oversight.
The survivors
Per the s4 recording, seven candidates survived all four phases. Two are named in transcript:
- Corvin / Hugo. Pre-experiment given name “Corvin” [5], revealed by the Black Mask using it as a casual address mid-negotiation. Hugo recovered a flashed memory of holding the hand of a woman and a small girl in a white dress and pigtails saying “daddy daddy see what I found” before pain “burrowed into his mind” and he was back in the arena [3]. He is now a barbarian based in Umbrafall, blue-skinned, with body-rewrite consequences ongoing. His handler is The Wraith. His pact with the Black Mask was signed [18] in part to retrieve information on his erased family.
- Bella. Named once, by Hugo, in the pact-renegotiation: “the other one with me, Bella, who also went through the showers with me, can she be converted into knowing the truth and breaking away as well?” [4]. The Black Mask has agreed to provide intelligence on her location and condition. She has not appeared on-screen.
The remaining five survivors have not been named or shown in play. The wiki does not speculate on their identities. Wraith’s exact relationship to Project Veilbreak remains uncertain.
In-fiction recognition signatures
Three on-screen NPCs have recognised Hugo’s project signature without being told:
- Maelis Dirn (s6). In the Maze of the Minotaur mid-Titan-fight, Maelis confronted Hugo across a stump-kill: “liar. I see the project’s work on you. you work for them and you will die and you will become a pet” [6]. Maelis Dirn recognized Project Veilbreak-style alteration, but her exact relationship to the Ascendancy is unconfirmed. Her own soul-binding experimentation in The Warrens is structurally adjacent (humans with injection ports as test subjects).
- The Titan (s7). When Hugo destroyed the fifth fungal node and the Titan turned on Maelis, the Titan finished her, then “shrunk, looked at Hugo before disappearing forever” [7]. The Titan was a previously-existing humanoid bound to five fungal nodes by Maelis’s ritual. The Titan’s full origin remains uncertain. The on-screen recognition between Hugo and the Titan is canon [7]; what it means is not.
- The Wraith (s7). Hugo’s named handler appeared in dream after the Maelis fight: “Subject. Status report” [19]. The Wraith speaks in the institutional voice of the project and addresses Hugo by designation. Wraith’s exact relationship to Project Veilbreak remains uncertain.
Session 17 — the canonical race-name and the blood-vision
Session 17 added three load-bearing facts to the project’s documented profile.
The race-name is “Voidforged”. The DM stated this out-of-character to Ash (the new player joining the table) when Hugo’s no-need-to-breathe biology became relevant to a contract bet: “oh yeah by the way Ash so just so you know Hugo is playing something called a void forged that don’t need to breathe but for all intents and purposes I look completely… human, more or less” [20]. This is the first time “Voidforged” appears on transcript. Previously the campaign’s working term for Project Veilbreak survivors had been “Project Veilbreak survivor” or “Void-Touched”; “Voidforged” is now canon as the race-name. Whether Voidforged is the race specifically of the post-rewrite subjects (i.e. only the seven survivors were turned into Voidforged) or a pre-existing race that the Project recruited from, is not yet stated.
The visual signature has been documented. Mike’s Investigation 15 on Hugo [11] returned: “slight glowing veins underneath his skin… his eyes seem to be glowing ever so faintly… his skin is rather grayish. More pale-ish”. Hugo’s blood when cut is luminous blue [21]. On their own these are visible at conversational distance; Hugo passes for human in most of his daily presentation by keeping his sleeves long and not bleeding in public.
The blood-vision and the “comply” whisper. Mike’s Detect Magic ritual on a vial of Hugo’s blood produced the most concrete imagery yet of where Hugo’s body was rewritten. The DM’s narration [13]:
“For a second it feels like, almost like the blood is alive and it notices you trying to find out what it is. And you see flashes of iron restraints, dark glass and a chamber with no clean air. You see a body surviving things that it shouldn’t survive. And then the vision snaps shut. And the magic is not sitting on Hugo. It’s almost like it’s built into him. His blood is acting like a living conduit. It stores stress, poison, pain, violence. And then it feeds that pressure back into his body.” — Nick (DM), [13]
A half-second whisper followed on Hugo’s side; almost subaudible; one word:
“somewhere in the back of your mind, a voice… It almost dies before forming the words, but you swear you hear the word, comply.” — Nick (DM), [14]
The “comply” whisper suggests Hugo’s conditioning or leash may still be active or leaving magical residue. Exact status unknown.
The DM confirmed in the same scene [15] that the imagery matches both what the Black Mask told Hugo in s4 and the environment in the Titan fight in s7. This is the campaign’s first cross-source convergence: the s4 Project recording (audio), the s7 Titan recognition (location), and the s17 blood-vision (Hugo-side imagery) now describe the same physical place. The implication is operationally significant — the project’s surviving subjects were rewritten in a specific architecture (iron restraints, dark glass, no clean air) that the campaign can in principle locate.
Hugo’s verbal disclosure to Mike during the same scene [12] was the first time he has volunteered the project’s profile to a non-pact-holder party member:
“I am the result of some form of experiment. And that I’m one of a few survivors.” — Hugo, [12]
Mike’s verdict at the end of the ritual [22]: “You are an abomination.” Mike has not told the rest of the party what he saw.
In the campaign
Hugo’s connection to the project is the central thread of his personal arc.
The s4 pact with the Black Mask included clauses tied directly to project-related grievances:
- Information-dispensation. The Mask agreed to provide intelligence on Hugo’s erased family (the flashed-memory wife and pigtails girl, [3] and on Bella’s location and condition.
- Operational support. Hugo has a clause to help kill the Project doctor.
- Last-stand support. If Hugo dies pursuing the destruction of the project, the Mask will help destroy it.
In session 12, on a long-rest watch, Hugo named the umbrella organisation explicitly: “the Ascendancy” [23], L202) and proposed upgrading the pact to “champion eternal” with the Mask helping him take it down. The Mask refused the framing as coercion-based (“the way that I get souls is through contracts … there’s rules”, [24] but offered a counter-proposal: convert a party ally to the same pact, and the Mask will help with The Wraith’s mind-control of Hugo. The Mask named the conversion target as Vasquez [25]. Hugo has not committed.
The project is therefore on the campaign-active list of antagonist organisations with a specific Hugo-personal vendetta clause and a specific Black-Mask-collaborative path forward, but has not yet generated a session-level operational beat beyond the s7 Wraith dream and the s12 negotiation.
The leash
The Wraith’s mind-control mechanism is referred to internally as the “leash”. It is operationally weakening (per the Wraith herself, [26] but not broken. Hugo passed his s7 Deception check (claiming his pull was as strong as ever), but the project’s monitoring of his loyalty is active and reportable. The leash is tied to the Wraith specifically as a handler — The Black Mask’s s12 offer to help with “your mind-control problem” frames the leash as removable through a specific operational intervention against the Wraith rather than against the project as a whole.
Connection to The Ascendancy
Project Veilbreak is one programme of The Ascendancy. The umbrella organisation runs the handler network (The Wraith), maintains the leash, and per the Black Mask’s s12 reference has “the very secret headquarters” with a “lead doctor” who can explain how the mind-control works [27]. The “lead doctor” is presumed to be Dr Flem Josenge, unless later clarified.
Open threads
- Where is Bella? The Black Mask claims knowledge. Hugo recognised her name immediately in s4 — they had survived together. Recovery, conversion, or rescue remain on the table.
- Hugo’s erased family. The flashed-memory wife and pigtails girl are unnamed and unlocated. The Mask agreed to provide intelligence; he has not yet delivered.
- The other survivors. Unnamed, undeployed-on-screen. The wiki does not speculate on their identities.
- The Project doctor’s whereabouts. Dr Flem Josenge is the project’s named lead per the s4 recording sign-off. Location unknown. Hugo wants him dead; the Mask agreed to help.
- The mechanic of the leash. Removable per the Mask [27], “find the lead doctor, have him explain how the mind control works, and break into the mind control yourself”). Currently active. Currently weakening.
- The viscous-fluid blood replacement. Unspecified compound. Hugo’s blue skin and Void-Touched subclass features are presumed to be downstream effects.
- The arena rule set. The recording specifies “1 of 100” but not how the round was structured, what weapons were available, what the win condition was, or whether the arena trials were the only arena-format combat in the project. The recap canon describes Hugo as remembering his blood “burning” and “sluggish” in the arena, consistent with the cellular-rewrite still in progress during the trials.
- Whether Project Veilbreak overlaps with the Aurelian Conspiracy. Both organisations traffic in human bodies as material. The Ascendancy’s geographic seat is unknown. Hugo is from Umbrafall. Aurelia is the principal antagonist faction. Whether the Ascendancy is housed inside Aurelia, opposed to Aurelia, or unrelated, is open. Speculative; the campaign has not yet linked them in transcript.
