Trey

Stub-class article

Trey (Discord handle) is the player who joined the table in session 20, taking the fifth seat after Ash left between sessions 19 and 20. He is from Australia. His character is Barney Amoran, a young High Elf artificer built around a self-made Armorer power suit, a magical screwdriver-wand, and a ley-line detector. Rather than introduce Barney with a fresh in-world scene, the DM installed him through a dual-memory retcon that overwrote Ash’s character Steven: the party woke on the interrupted night that closed session 19 with two equally real sets of memories, one with Steven and one with Barney, and Steven simply ceased to have existed [1], L155).

Characters played

  • Barney Amoran (s20-current) — a young High Elf artificer (playing as the Armorer subclass on the evidence of his kit): a self-built power suit with Thunder Gauntlets, retroactively-picked adamantine plate, a reconfigurable magical screwdriver he casts through, and a ley-line detector gizmo whose forearm bracer dims as the lines fail [1], L1347, L1485, L1620, L1140). Barney is a self-professed sceptic of magic who nonetheless plainly produces it, framing his effects as “magic but it’s flavoured very mechanically” that he makes “on the spot” [2], and he claims he does not need to rest, most likely elf Trance since he needs only four hours [3], L790). His stated reason for adventuring is to investigate the failing ley lines around Aurelia, having left an artificer apprenticeship unfinished [4], L1197). The party half-accused him of being an imposter, apologised when his hurt showed (“It’s heartbreaking”, [5], and then elected him their decision-maker [6].

At the table

Trey took the fifth seat in session 20, replacing Ash. The DM chose not to introduce Barney with a normal in-world arrival but to retcon him into the party’s shared history via a dual-memory device: the party remembers both a companion named Steven and a companion named Barney, and only one of them still exists [1], L101). The table leaned into the confusion as comedy for much of the first hour (“don’t make them complicated, we’re fucking stupid”, Caelumn, [7] before folding Barney in and, in a running joke, making the newcomer their leader on the grounds that everyone good at decisions tends to die first [8], L361). Barney’s mechanical identity is an Armorer artificer who fights through gear rather than incantation, capped in his debut by punching a ghoul’s head off with the suit’s stored energy to end the fight [9].
