Ash (Discord handle) is the player whose character is Steven, joining the table in session 17 alongside Brian. He is from the US [16]. Steven is his first-ever warlock build: a halfling Fiend warlock with Pact of the Blade and a dagger pact weapon. Ash is the “forever DM for my friend group” per his own intro [17] and flagged Steven as a few-days-old build at the table [18]. Ash left the table between sessions 19 and 20; Steven was retconned out of the campaign and the fifth seat passed to Trey, playing Barney Amoran.

Characters played

  • Steven (s17-s19; retconned out of the campaign in s20): halfling, 3'9", olive complexion, black hair, chubby [1]. Fiend warlock with Pact of the Blade and a dagger pact weapon that smells of expensive tobacco smoke when manifested [2]. Charlatan background: ran a fake-holy-water hustle outside an Aurelian church before the Aurelians sank his ship [3]. His Deception is formidable, a 26 on his first check [4], and he stays mum about his backstory beyond noting “last time I signed a contract, I got nightmares” [5][6], meaning he is already nightmare-bound by a previous pact (patron unspecified; backstory hook).

At the table

Ash’s first-session voice for Steven is the slick-conman cadence: “Time is money, and so is my time. My time is valuable money” [7], the chin-rub gesture [8], and the Halfling Luck reroll in the gambling game, which the DM narrated as a splash of water turning a 1 into a 7 [9][10][11]. Mid-session the DM worked out that Steven’s at-will Mage Armor should already be part of his AC, 13 plus his Dexterity modifier, “16 AC at least”, and, since he was wearing leather armour, simply added two “as a magical bonus” [12].

His first combat hit was a nat-20 dagger crit on a water wolf that left purplish blood on the blade [13], a visual the table immediately compared to (but the DM ruled distinct from) Hugo’s Voidforged luminous-blue blood.

Departure

Ash left the table between sessions 19 and 20. Rather than kill the character off, the DM retired Steven with a dual-memory retcon in session 20: the party woke to find the artificer Barney Amoran (played by the new player Trey) written into Steven’s place, with Steven erased from continuity [14][15].
