Barney Amoran: Inventory

Start-class article · First seen: s20 · Last seen: s20

Inventory for Barney Amoran (the young High Elf artificer written into the party in session 20 by the dual-memory retcon), an Armorer-flavoured artificer whose gear is built and maintained by his own hand: the party’s shared memory even includes “watching him work on his armor” [1]. His loadout is dominated by a self-built power suit that stores and re-emits kinetic energy, backed by adamantine plate, a reconfigurable magical screwdriver he casts through, and a ley-line detector tied to a glowing forearm bracer that dims as the world’s arcane grid fails [9], L1251, L1478).

Worn kit (mundane)

The DM’s establishing description of Barney fixes his whole silhouette in one block [1]:

  • Welding mask, pushed up above his forehead [1].
  • Leather apron worn over dirty brown overalls tucked into heavy boots [1].
  • Metal braces on both forearms, the left noticeably larger than the right [1]. The left brace is later shown to be more than decoration: it glows, and dims, in response to the failing ley lines (see the ley-line detector below).
  • Screwdriver in hand [1], later revealed to be a reconfigurable magical multi-tool (see Tools & crafting).

The power suit (Armorer armour)

Barney’s signature item is a self-built artificer power suit (Armorer subclass) that stores and re-emits kinetic energy. Both the DM and Barney treat it as his defining piece of kit:

  • Blocks blows. He brings up the suit to stop an ogre zombie’s “meaty paw” smash cold [2].
  • Thunder Pulse gauntlet strike: “my power suit little thunder pulse,” a simple melee attack dealing 1d8 thunder damage; on a hit the target has disadvantage on attack rolls against anyone but Barney [3]. Reused as his final action of the ambush.
  • The fight-ending punch. He channels the suit’s stored energy into his glove and punches the last ghoul’s head clean off, ending initiative: “the energy build from his suit… starts to slowly glow in his glove. He punches the ghoul’s face… it slumps down with no head” [4].

He flavours the mechanic after Black Panther’s kinetic suit: absorbing an attacker’s own energy and expelling it back, “a little ripple of blue fading into yellow.”

Magic items

  • Adamantine plate (selected mid-combat, [5]: chosen as one of his artificer’s replicable magic items after a ghoul opened the ambush with a critical hit. It turns critical hits into ordinary hits (the opening crit was downgraded on the spot, [6], and because he is an Armorer he can wear it without meeting the Strength requirement [7]. In fiction it is subsumed into the power suit rather than worn as separate plate.
  • The power suit (above) is his defining artificer creation and his most-used item.
  • Magical screwdriver (below) doubles as a spellcasting focus / wand.

Tools & crafting

  • Magical screwdriver [1], L1620): a reconfigurable multi-tool “that’s got little different compartments that I can take out and rearrange into different tools that I need, or into a magical wand,” which he casts through. He uses it to fire Ray of Frost as “a beam of solid ice cubes” at a ghoul’s head [8]. It is both his mundane tinkering implement and his arcane focus.

The ley-line detector (gizmo)

Arguably his most plot-relevant device: a hand-held gizmo, tied into his left forearm bracer, that reads ley-line activity.

  • The gizmo reveals the cause of the noon “shadows point east” glitch: “you look at one of your gizmos, and you see flickering ley lines… a symptom of the ley lines slowly failing” [9]. Barney shows it off as “my little gadget flickering with magic.”
  • The glowing left forearm bracer dims as the lines fail: “My left bracer along my forearm… it seemed to dim and fade more than it ever has” [10].
  • The party floats the detector as a way to locate dragons without waiting on Sevryn’s divination, making it central to the Egg quest going forward.

Tracked across sessions

  • s20: introduced with the party via the dual-memory retcon. Full starting loadout as above: welding mask, leather apron over overalls and heavy boots, forearm braces (left larger), self-built power suit (kinetic armour, Thunder Pulse gauntlet), adamantine plate picked mid-ambush, magical screwdriver/wand, and the ley-line detector gizmo plus its dimming left bracer [1], L1347, L1478, L1620, L1140, L1251).
