Umbrafall Mining Company

Stub-class article · First seen: s7 · Last seen: s10

The Umbrafall Mining Company is the Umbrafall concern whose miners went missing at the Black Vein Quarry, the job The Broker passed to the party in session 7. In the Broker’s telling the miners had found “a rare ore a bit north to Umbrafall” and gone missing, and the company was “too scared to go check themselves, you know, fancy lords and all that” [1][3]; the reward was 100 gold pieces [2]. The party found the miners dead and still at work as ghosts, perhaps corrupted through the cracked red crystal a succubus had been using [17][23], and the Broker paid in full in session 10 [15]. The company itself has never appeared on screen.

Overview

The Umbrafall Mining Company is the unseen client behind the Black Vein Quarry job. It appears only through The Broker, who passed the contract on in session 7: the company had lost miners at a new dig, would pay to have them recovered, and was too wary to look for itself. Nobody from the company ever met the party.

Known traits

  • A quarry north of the city. The miners had found “a rare ore a bit north to Umbrafall” [1]. The Broker marked the way on Hugo’s map to a small quarry [10], which the DM put “a day’s travel north” and later a day and a half away [11][12].
  • Too scared to look. In the Broker’s words it is “fancy lords and all that” who outsource the risk to adventurers [3].
  • Close-mouthed. The Broker did not think the company would say more than “here’s the spot. Please go claim our property back.” [4].
  • The ore. A “magical rare ore that seemed to have some sort of properties” [3], “extracting for use in Umbrafall” [13]. The party never found any [14].

History in the campaign

Session 7: Maelis Falls, Vasquez Captured

Main article: Session 7

After paying the party for Maelis Dirn, the Broker offered another contract: the company “has been missing some miners”, who had found “a rare ore a bit north to Umbrafall” [1]. The reward was 100 gold pieces [2]. Asked for more, he knew only that the company was too scared to check for itself, and that the miners had last been seen “three weeks ago” [3][5]. The party took the job and went on to find a bed for the night [18][19].

Session 8: Bruise the Cellmate, the Succubus, and the Quarry Ghosts

Main article: Session 8

With Vasquez freed, the party chose the official miners’ job over the urn-woman’s request, planning to ask the Broker about the clinic when they collected the reward [20]. The quarry was a day and a half away, and the miners had been missing three weeks [12][21]. At the quarry the miners turned out to be ghosts; the DM reminded the table that the contract was to find out what had happened to them, and added, “Yeah, but why?” [7].

Session 9: The Death of Harvo

Main article: Session 9

After the fight in the quarry, Caelumn assumed the ghosts were the missing miners [22]. After an Intelligence check, the DM told him that the stone was perhaps something the succubus could siphon or use “to corrupt the miners into those ghost-like beings”, noting they were “still mining away” [17][23]. Asked what the mine was for, the DM said they “found some rare ore that they have been extracting for use in Umbrafall”, but the party had found none in the quarry [13][14].

Session 10: Ruin Joins, the Aurelian Conspiracy, the Plate Armour

Main article: Session 10

Back in Umbrafall, Hugo told the Broker the miners were all dead, turned into ghosts by “some kind of like succubus thing and crystal energy in the cave” [24]. The Broker replied, “your job is done and here is payment in full,” and handed over a pouch of gold, which the table remembered as 100 gold [15][25]. The party dealt with the Broker throughout, and nobody from the company appeared.

Status

As of session 23. Unknown and off-screen. The company has not appeared since the job closed, and nothing says whether the quarry reopened or what became of the ore. In session 19 Hugo summed the job up for The Wraith as having “helped with some mining issues” in Umbrafall [26].
