House Tallow is the Velkris merchant house that dominates refined alchemy. Medicine, perfume, contract wax, embalming oil, legal poisons, expensive inks, antidotes, preservation fluids, and reagents often pass through Tallow hands before reaching polite society. The house’s public clinics save lives. Its private laboratories ask what a life is worth. House Tallow is one of the five merchant houses that make up the Council of Factors. Its current factor is Sella Tallow, a yuan-ti woman with a physician’s calm and a poisoner’s patience. The house’s saying is: “If Tallow made the cure, ask what else it treats.” The party has not yet visited Velkris and has not encountered Tallow product or staff on-screen.

Overview

House Tallow is the Velkris merchant house whose business is what comes out of a still, a press, a retort, or a sealed flask. Tallow makes medicines that save lives. It also makes the poisons that take them, the perfumes that conceal both, the embalming oils for what is left, the wax that seals every Velkris contract, the inks that write them, the antidotes for the ones Tallow itself sells, and the reagents that supply most of the city’s other arcane industries.

The house’s range is the joke and the warning at the same time. A Tallow physician with the standard practitioner’s kit can stabilise a stab wound, suppress a fever, ease a difficult birth, and write a death certificate from the same satchel. The house’s saying is the city’s recognition of this:

“If Tallow made the cure, ask what else it treats.”

House Tallow is one of the five merchant houses on the Council of Factors. The current factor is Sella Tallow, a yuan-ti woman whose public manner is the calm of a senior physician and whose private reputation, in the Silent Hall, is the patience of a poisoner working a long contract.

What Tallow does

The house’s catalogue, by practice area:

Medicine — Tallow clinics operate in every district of Velkris, with sliding-scale pricing in the lower districts and full-service apothecary work in the upper. The clinics are genuinely competent and genuinely lifesaving. They are also the most common venue for the small medical loan that begins a Marr bonded contract.
Perfume and cosmetics — high-margin upper-district product, primarily for Vaunt households and prestige clients. The perfumery is also a laundering vehicle for ingredients that move under other names.
Contract wax and seals — the wax that seals every Orlan instrument, every Veil registration, every Council decree. The wax is reliable, distinctive, and traceable — Tallow keeps batch records that can identify any seal back to the year it was made.
Embalming oils and mortuary supplies — the upper-district market for clean and dignified preservation. The lower-district equivalent is much rougher and is handled by competing providers; Tallow does not compete there.
Legal poisons — yes. Velkris’s regulatory regime treats certain substances as legal commodities subject to registration and use restrictions. Tallow is the city’s largest registered producer. The legal use cases — pest control, agricultural pesticide, certain medical applications, ritual reagent — are extensive. The illegal use cases are the ones the city does not formally track.
Expensive inks — including the metallic and arcane-doped inks the city’s scribes use for high-value documents. A Tallow ink batch is identifiable.
Antidotes — sold openly. Tallow antidote work is also one of the house’s diplomatic exports; foreign powers buy Tallow antidote stock by the case.
Preservation fluids and reagents — the upstream supply for the city’s alchemical, mortuary, and ritual industries. Other alchemists buy from Tallow because Tallow’s batch consistency is unmatched.

The phrase “private laboratories” in the world brief is doing real work. The public clinics and the public catalogue are not the whole house. The private laboratories work on commissions the catalogue does not list.

Doctrine

Tallow doctrine, as the house presents it, is service. The catalogue is broad because Velkris’s needs are broad. The clinics are real because the city’s people genuinely benefit from them. The poisons are produced because the regulatory regime is real. The private laboratories exist because the city sometimes needs work no catalogue could publicly list.

Tallow doctrine, as the Silent Hall understands it, is closer to: every house has a leverage instrument; Tallow’s leverage instrument is what you are made of. A house that can stabilise a fever can also let one run. A house that supplies the city’s antidote stocks can also delay a delivery. A house whose batch records can identify the year a seal was made can also fail to identify it. Tallow’s restraint is what keeps these capabilities private; the restraint itself is the leverage.

The Tallow apparatus

The house’s institutional layout:

Public clinics — district-level, several dozen across the city.
Apothecaries — retail outlets selling the standard catalogue.
The Perfumery — the prestige outlet in the upper districts, housed in a Vaunt-built terrace.
The Registered Laboratories — Veil-registered, periodically audited, producing the legal-poisons and high-value-reagent catalogue.
The Private Laboratories — uncatalogued, on house grounds, accessible only to senior Tallow practitioners and Council-cleared commission clients. The single most discreet institution in Velkris.
The Mortuary Supply Hall — embalming oils, preservation fluids, mortuary fittings. Adjacent to the city’s principal undertakers, who are mostly Tallow-aligned.

Relations with other houses

House Marr — operational alignment. Tallow clinic staff are stationed at Marr placement houses and labour pens. The clinics’ loans frequently become Marr contracts.
House Brask — long-term retainer for reagent transport and laboratory security. Brask companies escort the dangerous shipments; Brask retainers guard the Private Laboratories’ approach.
House Orlan — close. Tallow banks with Orlan; Tallow’s medical loans are written on Orlan paper.
House Vaunt — Tallow’s prestige outlets are in Vaunt-built locations; the two houses’ cultures share an upper-district sensibility, and the Perfumery is a Vaunt-Tallow joint prestige project.
Order of the Veil — the Veil’s registration regime is the legal frame Tallow operates inside. Tallow is, in the Veil’s view, a model registrant: documentation is complete, audits go smoothly, the unregistered work is invisible.

Reputation

In Velkris, Tallow is the most ambivalent of the five houses’ public reputations. The clinics are loved. The factor is respected. The catalogue is trusted. The private laboratories are not discussed.

In the lower districts, the clinics’ role in beginning Marr contracts is understood; people use them anyway because the alternative is worse. In the upper districts, the perfumery and apothecary are part of the daily texture of prestige life. Outside Velkris, Tallow’s antidote and reagent exports give the house a quietly favourable reputation in Aurelia (clean catalogue, reliable supply), in Arcanthys (high-value arcane reagents), and in Khaldun Forgehold (specialist quenching oils for the Runeworks). The private-laboratories side of the business is not visible to any of these foreign customers, by design.

Posture toward the party

Unknown; no on-screen contact. The party has not visited Velkris.

The party’s earliest plausible Tallow exposure is medical. Any injury, illness, or magical complication that lands them in a Tallow clinic begins a relationship with the house, and that relationship has standard onboarding paperwork. The earliest plausible complication is reagent: any party member buying alchemical components in the Grand Exchange will be buying Tallow upstream supply, and any unusual purchase will be noted.

A more serious complication: if a party member’s injuries, ancestry, or behaviour interests the Private Laboratories, the contact will be discreet, the offer will be polite, and the consequences of declining will be invisible and patient. Sella Tallow is not, per the world brief, a factor who moves quickly. She is a factor who notes things.
