Session 9 (“The Death of Harvo”) is the first death of an active player character since Cholmondeley’s in session 3. Mid-fight with the Black Vein Quarry’s spectres, Vasquez accepted the help of a presence that tore horns from his skull and remade him as a half-demon elf; it named itself Mharos [11][221][14]. Deeper in, past a wight that asked why “it” had succeeded with Vasquez, a man kneeling at a cracked red crystal pulled the party into visions of their worst failures and revealed herself as a succubus [17][138][139]. She dominated Hugo, who downed Vasquez; when she took him a second time, Harvo stood in his way, and Hugo’s natural-20 hand-axe beheaded Harvo, ending Mordane’s first character [21][249]. Hugo killed her once he was free [250]. At the funeral pyre Terry failed to sing his people’s Rite of Returning and lost a point of Charisma for good [251].

Recap heard at start of session

Terry’s player Chris gave the recap on the DM’s d6 roll [8]. Starting from the return to the city after the Titan, he covered Vasquez’s arrest and the prison name “Bruise”, the cellmate’s rats, the bribe that brought the price from 500 gold down to 150, the lye in the urn and the party’s theory of liquid cremation, the experimental potions, the succubus in the clearing and her Charlatan’s Die, and the quarry, where the miners had become ghosts, his familiar was shot down and the session ended against the spectres’ necrotic touch [9]. The DM corrected nothing and gave him an inspiration [10].

Executive Summary

Mid-fight with the quarry’s spectres, Vasquez accepts a presence’s offer to share his burden; horns tear through his skull, his scarred face heals, and the dying spectres’ essence flows into him as the entity names itself Mharos [11][12][13][14][15]. Above the quarry floor the party find a dead priest of Ilmater and fight skeleton archers and a CR 3 wight that resents Vasquez’s bargain [16][17][18]. Through an illusion wall, a kneeling man at a cracked red crystal pulls each of them into a vision of their worst failure; Terry and Caelumn fail and come out frightened, and the man is a succubus [19][20]. Freed a second time, Hugo kills her [23][24]. The party burn Harvo on a pyre, where Terry’s failed Rite of Returning costs him a point of Charisma for good [25].

Narrative

The bargain. As the spectres closed in, the DM described a presence settling beside Vasquez, steady and familiar, and the thought “You don’t have to carry this alone anymore.” [26]. It asked to help him hold the weight, and Vasquez’s player rolled for his answer; above ten, he would accept, and he reached back [27]. The pain hit at once: horns tore free “with a wet, grinding crack” [1], his veins burned as if filled with embers, and the spectres faltered as “the despair animating them is seemingly dragged away into you” [1]. The DM rewrote his race on the sheet: “you are now a half-demon elf” [28]. To the others it looked like black lightning, horns curling from his skull, cracked skin, changed eyes and runes [29].

The spectres fall. Vasquez’s first swing killed a spectre, and “you see its essence just get drawn into you” [30]. Caelumn’s first-level Magic Missile finished three more, each soul dragged into Vasquez [31], and Hugo, Terry and Harvo’s Force Ballista and Fire Bolt took the rest [32]. The DM summed it up: “Seems like you’ve saved your allies, but at a cost.” [33].

A voice and a new face. Vasquez felt warmer and heavier about the head but denied any dark urges when Caelumn asked [34]. Then a voice spoke inside him, calling itself Empraros, what remains when fear is carried too long, buried for spreading that weight [13]. Vasquez repeated it aloud to the others [35]. Asked what it was, it gave its name as Mharos, a concept more than a thing, and promised he would learn [36]. His mouth had healed: he pulled out the two bars that had held his face together, and his face was unscarred [37][38]. Harvo reckoned whoever had been hunting him would never recognise him now [39], and Terry, who suggested a turban, tested him by handing him a pickaxe; Vasquez passed it to Caelumn and felt nothing [40][41].

The priest of Ilmater. Caelumn lit his hand with Produce Flame to climb to the platforms [42] and spotted a half-buried body below him [43]. It was a priest clutching a pendant: a gold chain and an ivory hand holding a golden ring with a ruby heart that bore two faces, one smirking and one sad [44]. Terry took it [45], wishing aloud “It would be good if you had that Cholmondeley guy” [46], and Caelumn’s roll of 20 named it the symbol of a cleric of Ilmater [47]. No one knew why such a cleric had come to the quarry; Caelumn guessed another party sent after the miners, and they agreed to keep the pendant and ask the Broker [48].

The wight and the skeletons. Moving on with a flame in his hand, Caelumn rolled natural 1s for Stealth and Perception [49]. The party rolled initiative at disadvantage [50] as a wight on a 25-foot platform shot Caelumn for 6 piercing and 5 necrotic and tried to pull out his life, which he resisted on a 16 [51]. Skeleton archers fired and dropped prone between shots, and Terry withdrew into his shell for an armour class of 23 [52]. Hugo climbed up and dropped a ladder for the others [53], and Caelumn spent his free daily Cure Wounds yet still felt “severely drained” [54]. From the bridge the wight shot Vasquez and demanded to know what made him so special; its necrotic did less than it should, “Almost like your new form is resistant to it.” [17]. When Vasquez struck it, the voice in his head said “Kill the Pretender.” [55], and something in him was satisfied [56]. Caelumn’s Fire Bolt finished the wight; a binding in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring with a second-level slot could not take a CR 3 soul, the slot was spent anyway, and the soul “just dissipates instead” [57]. Vasquez felt “a sort of schadenfreude” [58], and Harvo’s cannon blew the last skeleton off the edge [59].

What the archers were. Terry’s Investigation showed the skeletons looked like miners, but the wight wore studded leather and carried a short sword it could channel necrotic energy into [60]. Hugo found on it heavily used armour, a longbow, the sword and about 17 silver and 2 gold, and left the gear [61]. Vasquez kicked the corpse and told the others that the voice had called it a pretender, and that it had asked why it had not worked for him [62]. Asked again what shot Earthwing, the DM said it was very likely the skeletons or the wight [63].

The hidden chamber. After a short break Harvo reminded everyone that they had agreed not to rush [64]. His Detect Magic showed illusion on a wall in the upper corner, and a thrown rock went straight through it [65]. Hugo, stealthed, found it a one-way wall into a corridor [66]. At its end a man who looked like a mining foreman knelt before a hovering red crystal with black cracks [67], which to Harvo’s magical sight gave off enchantment [68]. Caelumn stepped forward with a soft hello; the man smiled over his shoulder, smoke rushed past, and they were no longer in the mine [69].

The visions. Each of them relived their greatest failure while a woman mocked them [70]. Vasquez was at the forge making a knife to impress his adopted father, Bison, when the mould shattered [71]; she offered to take away “something much worse inside of you” [72], and he refused: “I don’t want it gone not yet don’t take this from me” [73]. He passed with an 18 and saw his father proud of a perfect knife [74]. Harvo, in the library where he had never learned why his lost hand could not be healed, told her he was over it, and passed [75]. Terry relived the Rite of Returning he played for his dead sister, which met “No echo, no answer” [76], and his people’s belief that a failed song means the player lacked faith or the soul was gone [77]. He failed at disadvantage, and the vision told him “maybe you did do it on purpose” [78] before he came out frightened and scarred [79]. Hugo relived the battlefield where, crazed by bloodlust, he killed his own team; he told her they had never been his allies, passed on a 17, and was sure this group would be different [80]. Caelumn relived the Platinum Order, where he never lived up to his ancient draconic blood; even with his inspiration, his defence rang hollow, and he too came out frightened, face to face with a succubus [81].

The succubus. Caelumn opened with a first-level Witch Bolt for 11 lightning [82]. Vasquez charged her with a fire cartridge for maximum damage; the voice in his head shouted “Don’t use fire!” [83], and an Action Surge lightning charge did even less [84]. She flew past him and ran her hand across Hugo: “Fight for me, my champion.” [85]. He failed his save, and she pointed him at Vasquez: “kill that one” [86]. Raging at full stacks, Hugo hit Vasquez with both axes for 14 and 17, dropped him, then knelt to her and held an axe at his throat [87][88].

Harvo’s death. Caelumn’s Quickened Magic Missile did not break her concentration, but the Fire Bolt after it did: “Hugo, your mind is again your own” [89]. She simply touched Hugo again, and he failed again [90]. Harvo hit her with Shocking Grasp, which stopped her making opportunity attacks, then put himself in the way of the raging, controlled barbarian heading for Vasquez [91]. Hugo’s first axe met Harvo’s Shield; the second was a natural 20 for 23, and Harvo, already down to 10 maximum hit points and 5 temporary ones, could not survive it [92]. Asked for Harvo’s last thoughts as the axe came for his neck, Mordane gave them: “Well, fuck.” [93]. His head was separated from his body [94].

The succubus dies. Terry, frightened, missed her [95]. Caelumn had no slots left, but his Fire Bolt hit for a maximum 10, she failed her concentration on a 9, and Hugo was free for the second time [96]. She dominated Terry next, telling him to kill Caelumn “with your most powerful spell” [97], and her touch put Caelumn down [98][99][100]. Hugo got to her first: two thrown axes, a 21 and a natural 20, for 29, the first burying itself in her hand and the second taking her head [101]. As she died, the crystal behind them cracked completely [102]. Terry, no longer frightened, threw the healing potion Hugo pulled from his necklace; on a flat d20 of 15 or more it hit, broke on Vasquez’s armour and healed him for 9 [103], one roll from death [104]. Caelumn came round on a death save with one hit point [105].

After the fight. Vasquez woke to Harvo’s head staring at him from ten feet away [106]. Hugo heard the vision again, “you will be the death of these people” [107], and knelt by Harvo’s body [108]. When Vasquez told him he would stay standing the next time Hugo hit him, Hugo answered only with a small smile [109]. Something in Vasquez was happy, about the crystal, about the succubus and about what was happening in the group [110]. Hugo found nothing on her and crushed her head under his foot [111], and Vasquez cut a piece of metal from Harvo’s weapon to wear as a charm, “carrying on his legacy” [112]. On bringing Harvo back, Hugo thought his organisation might, at a low chance; Terry pointed out they had not done it for Cholmondeley; Caelumn doubted they had “the power, the backing, the funds” [113]; and Vasquez asked the thing inside him and met silence [114]. Caelumn’s Intelligence check suggested the succubus had used the crystal to turn the still-working miners into ghosts, though no ore was found [115].

The pyre. The party carried Harvo’s body and head out and built a pyre [7]. His +1 wand had been an infusion and lost its magic with him, so Hugo took only his healing potion [116]. Hugo spoke: “you’re a good man you were smart probably smarter than a lot of us here” [117]. Caelumn lit the pyre from his hand and commended Harvo to Bahamut’s halls, hoping he would not be “forced to deal with morons” [118]. Terry tried to sing Harvo’s soul into the harmony with the Rite of Returning, without proficiency in Performance [119], and heard again that it was his fault his sister was not part of it [120]. He spoiled the funeral, and the DM took a point of Charisma, permanently [121]. The DM ended the session on “the death of an ally” [122], a curse or transformation for another, “and everyone’s faith shaken” [123].
