Session 8 is the eighth recorded session and the bridge between the Maelis Dirn arc and the Black Vein Quarry. Vasquez is in a Nightwatch jail cell renamed “Bruise” by his cellmate Jack; the rest of the party reveal that the urn-woman’s sister was almost certainly aquamated at the Dawn Mercy Clinic rather than cremated; Harvo bribes the corrupt Nightwatch jailers and bails Vasquez out for 150 gp; the party makes camp on the road north and is attacked by a succubus disguised as an old woman, alongside two crossbow-thieves; Terry finally completes his Find Familiar ritual (“Earthwing” the owl, named after Earthwing the s3 Owlin); the party reaches the Black Vein Quarry and triggers a fight with reanimated miners that turn out to be ghosts. Session ends mid-combat as the Christmas / New Year break.

Executive Summary

Vasquez wakes in a Nightwatch jail cell, where his cellmate Jack misnames him “Bruise” and offers him chicken-flavoured rats. Meanwhile the rest of the party investigate the urn-woman’s contents, smell lye, and discover that her sister was likely aquamated at the Dawn Mercy Clinic rather than cremated as claimed. After ruling out a jailbreak as too risky, Harvo disguises in plain civilian and bribes the Nightwatch jail clerks (Jorin and Harak) 150 gp for Vasquez’s release. The party heads north toward the Black Vein Quarry; on the road, they make camp in a forest clearing, are accosted by an old woman who turns out to be a succubus, and fight her along with two stealthed thief-archers. Terry finally completes Find Familiar mid-camp (“dancing” the bagpipe-Macarena ritual) and summons Earthwing the owl. After the succubus dies and a Charlatan’s Die is looted, the party long-rests and reaches the Black Vein Quarry. Earthwing is shot out of the air by an unseen stealthed creature; the party advances cautiously to find ghost-miners working a wall. Caelumn’s Firebolt aggros them; combat begins; one ghost passes through walls, attacks the party, and ends the session draining maximum HP from multiple party members. Session pauses mid-combat as the Christmas / New Year break.

Narrative

Cold-open in the cell. Vasquez (now bearing the cellmate-given name “Bruise” — Jack misheard “Cruz”) wakes in a humid jail cell to a guard’s “teach you mess with Nightwatch business” and a faceful of cold water [10]. His cellmate Jack is a spindly human in a corner who immediately offers chicken-flavoured rats: “the only reason I’m asking is because the rats sometimes taste a bit like chicken” [11]. Vasquez gave the alias Cruz but Jack heard Bruise. Bruise it is.

The urn-woman investigation. Cut to Risa and the rest of the party in a rain-drenched alley. Hugo’s perception (22) detected the unmistakable smell of lye in the urn rather than ashes [12]. Hugo (on out-of-character knowledge): “I wondered if they aquamated her, that’s why it smelled of lye because the chemicals they use for aquamation will somewhat resemble lye” [13]. Risa recounted the timeline anomaly: her sister was burned at 10:00 AM, but the clinic logs show someone checked on her at 10:20 — i.e., after she was supposedly cremated. The clinic name: Dawn Mercy [14]. Risa’s sister had been suffering headaches and seeing things, swore she had turned a candle on with her mind. The party agreed: cover-up.

The party debated rescue plans for Vasquez. Hugo (most law-aware): “Pay for his release, or break him out.” Terry suggested impersonating a Thieves Guild representative; Harvo objected to using the Thieves Guild name in case the Thieves Guild caught wind. Eventually they agreed: Harvo (the only one not seen at the fight) would walk in and offer cash. Caelumn surrendered 130 gp from his personal stash; the party emptied the shared inventory of 93 gp. Total: ~228 gp on hand.

The bail negotiation (Harvo’s diplomacy hour). Harvo entered the Nightwatch jail front office. Two clerks named Jorin and Harak sat at a long desk. Harvo claimed his “mentors would like to be staying anonymous in this glorious city of Umberfall,” asked for the recently arrested elf-looking man with the strange weapons. The clerk flipped to today’s log entry: “It’s written down as bitch-ass elf” [15]. The official price for release with all belongings and erased records: 500 gp. Harvo offered 100 gp under-the-table to Jorin and Harak personally. They countered with 100 each (200). After Persuasion negotiation, Harvo settled at 75 each (150 gp total) for an off-record release. He returned, collected the cash from the party in the alley, paid the bribe. Vasquez was led out, gear dumped on the floor.

Vasquez’s reunion: Hugo apologetic (“I couldn’t stand by and watch that happen”); Harvo lecturing Vasquez to think before acting; Vasquez explaining his backstory rage was triggered by the Titan fight (“there was this witch that flipped in Vasquez. He’s not exactly staying out of things like he was before”). The party headed for the Black Vein Quarry, opting to pursue the official mining quest first and return to Risa later. [16].

Camp on the road. After 8 hours of travel they found a clearing in the bio-gloom forest. Caelumn perception-checked canine footprints approaching the camp. Vasquez (Survival proficient) dug a fire-pit but lacked a shovel; Harvo Tinkered a metal-plate-and-stick spade and tossed it to him; Vasquez then rolled a great fire-pit on advantage. Hugo helped collect firewood. The party barely sat down before footsteps approached: an old woman with a torch, lost, asking for help getting back to Umbrafall.

Vasquez stepped forward (now the only reliable “go forward and help the lady” character). The old woman whispered something to him — a Charisma save (failed); dominate person at 8th level (DM noted, “what increases the spell level is just duration”). She transformed: a succubus, with two stealthed crossbow-thief-archers in cover. Initiative.

Succubus combat. Round 1: Caelumn cast Magic Missile at 1st level (3 darts, all 3 forced Concentration saves on the succubus); succubus failed first save and dropped Vasquez’s domination. The two archers fired poisoned crossbow bolts on rotation: 18 hit Caelumn (8 piercing + 9 poison), 18 hit Hugo (3 piercing + 7 poison). The succubus dropped a second Dominate Person on Terry (failed Wisdom save 12, used Heroic Inspiration → still failed), now controlled. The succubus ordered Terry to use his highest-level spells to heal her. Terry: “I don’t have any healing spells.” (Yes, this was very useful narratively.)

Hugo went in melee on the succubus. Vasquez Greatsword’d her. Hugo crit on a nat 20 swing for 17 damage. Caelumn twin-spelled Chromatic Orb at 3rd level (lightning, advantage from Innate Sorcery): nat 20 → 48 damage to the first archer, bouncing to the succubus for 21 damage. Terry was eventually freed by Concentration breaking when Caelumn’s Magic Missile broke through; Terry then true-strike hit the succubus.

The succubus shifted strategy: she kissed Harvo (“can you make me a Con save please… You feel your life drain out of your soul as she sucks you… or at least tries to suck you dry”) for 6 necrotic damage and -6 max HP, then dominated Harvo on a failed Charisma save (despite advantage from elf trait). Harvo ordered to heal her at biggest spell. He cast Cure Wounds (rolling poorly: 5+ healing), then on his bonus action Eldritch-Cannon-blasted her (could not target the dominator with action; could with bonus, since the cannon was a separate attack). 18 damage; pushed her back; charm ended.

Hugo finished the succubus with handaxes — first a 9 damage hit, then 11 damage (final blow) — chopping off her head as she tried to shape-shift mid-collapse. The remaining two archers fell to a Hugo handaxe spin-move (14 damage one, 12 damage the other; both KO’d in his final turn).

Looting. From the succubus: a six-sided die. Harvo cast Identify: a Charlatan’s Die — “whenever you roll the six-sided die, you can control which number it rolls.” [17]. Caelumn took it. From the archers: 8, 10, 5, 5 gp; 4 hand crossbows; 4 short swords; 4 sets of thieves’ tools (added to party stash).

Find Familiar finally. Terry began ritual-casting Find Familiar at start of camp (1 hour 10 minutes); the succubus interrupted at the 1-hour-9-minute mark (DM joke: “the minute, yeah, after an hour and nine minutes I hit you so you can’t ritual cast it”). Caelumn proposed harassing Terry to prevent completion; Hugo “kicked Callum” stopping him. After combat, Terry finally completed the cast, dramatically described as a chant somewhere between Latin and the Macarena: “Dale a tu cuerpo alegría Macarena… eh Macarena… I’m done. Guys, I’ve cast it.” Terry took an Inspiration. The familiar manifested as Earthwing — a miniature owlin “remarkably similar to the Owlin that recently joined the party briefly” (the s3 cameo PC, also named Earthwing; reused here as the owl familiar by Chris). Earthwing pops out of Terry’s shell (“he’s been in the shell for ages, scratching me, it’s been really annoying”).

The Black Vein Quarry. The party long-rested through an uneasy night with vague feelings of forgotten things, then made the rest of the journey north. The quarry described in detail by the DM: black-stone terraces, broken lift-grain, rust-iron carts, no birds, no insects, “even the bio-gloom here pulls slower, dimmer, as if the quarry itself is holding its breath” [18]. Metal-on-stone strikes from below, slow and rhythmic, “wrong” [19].

Two ghost-miners in the gloom — torn jaws hanging loose, crawling along walls “as we’re searching for something inside the rock” [20]. They noticed the party but did not approach.

Earthwing dies. Terry sent Earthwing forward to scout (Stealth 14). The owl flew over the cavern, flying at the roof. As it returned to report, the DM rolled: a stealthed creature with a 20 stealth check invisible to Earthwing’s perception sniped it out of the air for 6 piercing + 8 necrotic damage, killing it (Earthwing only had 1 HP). Terry: “you fucking blast it out of the sky, you motherfucker.” [21]

Quarry ghost combat begins. The party stealthed (everyone passed). They debated whether to engage. Caelumn cast Blade Ward — verbal and somatic component drew the ghosts’ attention. Initiative. Round 1: ghost flew through the wall, Hugo recklessly swung for 14 damage with his magical weapon (which seemed to hit the ghosts at full effect). Round 2: a ghost ran its hand through Caelumn for 9 necrotic + 9 max HP reduction; Hugo took 0 (missed); Terry true-struck silver-short-sword for 7 radiant. Round 3: Hugo crit nat 20 — 19 hits as well — total 26 damage. Round 4: A second ghost hits Hugo for 10 (damage absorbed by rage resistance possibly); a third ghost drained Caelumn down completely with 9 necrotic + 9 max-HP loss; Caelumn went down. Round 5: Hugo’s force ballista hit a ghost for 14 damage. The session ended with Caelumn down, Harvo down (drained on a 21 hit for 11 necrotic + 11 max-HP loss), and the third ghost intact with the party scattered.

End of session as Christmas/New Year cliffhanger. The DM said: “The ghosts leave you on one HP but decide to drag you off elsewhere… Now it’s a jailbreak with the three remaining people” [22]. Vasquez muttered “I’m tired, boss.” Hugo: “Find out next time on Dragon Ball P.”

Dialogue Highlights

  1. Jack to a freshly-woken Vasquez: “You don’t want to mess with Nightwatch. No, no, no, no, no. That’s, yeah, it’s a bad idea. But I’m sure we’ll be friends. Tell me, do you like chicken?… The only reason I’m asking is because the rats sometimes taste a bit like chicken.”
  2. Vasquez, on his cell-introduction: “I’m Cruz.” [Jack misheard as “Bruise.”]
  3. Risa (urn-woman): “She was burned at 10. But someone visited her or checked up on her at 10:20.”
  4. Hugo, ID’ing the urn: “you’re an educated barbarian. I spend a lot of time around dead bodies and disposing bodies.”
  5. The Nightwatch jail clerk, reading the log: “It’s written down as bitch-ass elf.”
  6. Harvo, working the bribe: “Just quick and easy business. Just bring out this elf that you have, and we all go our separate ways, we never cross paths ever again.”
  7. The succubus (telepathic, while dominating Harvo): “Please be a dear and heal me with your biggest spell.”
  8. Vasquez, post-jail and post-Titan-trauma, to Harvo’s lecture: “After that whole fight with that giant and that witch, there was this witch that flipped in Vasquez. He’s not exactly staying out of things like he was before.”
  9. Terry, mid-Find-Familiar ritual-cast: “Dale a tu cuerpo alegría Macarena… eh Macarena… Dale a tu cuerpo alegría Macarena… que tu cuerpo es para da-le agua y bueno…”
  10. Earthwing’s first telepathic line (Hugo in-character voicing): “I am the night.”

Clues & Foreshadowing

  1. The Dawn Mercy Clinic is aquamating people, not cremating them. Lye smell + 20-minute timeline gap between official cremation and someone “checking on” the body. Strongly implies bodies are not actually being burned — bodies may be being preserved, transported, or extracted while the legal record claims cremation. Source: Risa’s account + Hugo’s nature-knowledge identification.
  2. Risa’s sister had latent magical ability (“turned a candle on with her mind”). The clinic targets people with latent talent? Cared about: Risa, Caelumn, Hugo.
  3. Earthwing was killed by something invisible in the quarry with a 20 stealth roll. Terry confirmed via owl warging that no zombies were at the kill — the killer is a separate creature, possibly fourth ghost in stealth.
  4. The quarry has no birds or insects. Something is killing all small life. Foreshadow: hostile hunting predator.
  5. The miners are working a wall with their bare hands “searching for something inside the rock” — they don’t know they’re dead, they’re still trying to fulfill their last task.

Open Mysteries & Unanswered Questions

  1. What is the Dawn Mercy Clinic doing with bodies? Best evidence: lye in urns, log discrepancies, Risa’s sister’s latent magical ability. Cared about: Risa (most), Caelumn, Hugo, possibly the Broker.
  2. What killed Earthwing? Best evidence: stealthed sniper with 20 stealth, no visible source, separate from the ghost-miners. Cared about: Terry, the party.
  3. What did the miners discover, and what are they still mining for? Best evidence: rare-ore find that triggered the missing-miners job; ghost-miners still working the wall.
  4. Are these ghosts the missing miners? Best evidence: appearance, posture, location. Confirming that they “are” the miners satisfies the Broker contract — but their continued unrest means the cause isn’t gone.
  5. Was the succubus connected to anything larger? Best evidence: she was alone but with two thief-archer minions, intercepting travellers on the road north. Not yet connected to Maelis or Dawn Mercy explicitly.

Quests

  1. [completed (mid-progress)] Bail Vasquez out of jail: 150 gp paid; Vasquez free.
  2. [active] The Black Vein Quarry / Umbrafall Mining Company: confirmed miners are dead/ghosts. The Broker’s contract specifies finding out why they’re like this. Currently mid-fight.
  3. [active] Dawn Mercy Clinic / Risa’s missing sister: confirmed conspiracy. Plan: deal with quarry first, return to Risa.
  4. [active, deferred] Silent Intake / Duskwatch shipping ledger: Velkris-bound delivery still pending.
  5. [active] Hugo’s pact with Black Mask.
  6. [active] The Wraith / Project monitoring: Hugo passed last check; project suspects loyalty drift.

Faction & Relationship Changes

  • Vasquez owes the party 150 gp (mostly Caelumn’s 130 personal gp). Vasquez committed: “I will pay back every cent. Whatever we accumulate, just deduct it from whatever I would get.”
  • The Nightwatch has a corruption-vector relationship now with Harvo (he successfully bribed the front desk). Future bribes potentially viable.
  • Risa is now an active quest-giver waiting at the Glomangol Inn.
  • Hugo’s relationship with Vasquez: Hugo voluntarily intervened to help save Vasquez post-arrest, shifting from “I do not get involved with the Nightwatch” to “I’ll go in”.
  • Harvo’s relationship with Caelumn: Harvo is now openly the “voice of reason” of the group. Caelumn agreed: “Yeah, that’s a very fair point.”

Table Rulings

  1. Drinking healing potions across actions: re-affirmed bonus action drink-self / action administer (re-stated).
  2. Eldritch Cannon Protector mode grants 1d8 + INT temp HP to selected creatures within 10 ft. Affects up to 4 creatures within range. Harvo used it for the first time this session.
  3. Find Familiar requires a 1-hour ritual + components (incense + brazier). Components consumed only upon successful cast. Confirmed by DM.
  4. Stealth rules — DM has reverted to old rules: passive perception comparison, NOT the new “DC 15 = invisible” 2024 rules. “Now I don’t know if I’m hidden or not.” [23]
  5. Dominate Person upcast mechanics: 8th level upcast extends duration, not effect strength (DM clarified Terry’s confusion).
  6. Owl familiar warging — when the familiar dies, the owner doesn’t necessarily perceive what killed it: only if the attacker doesn’t beat stealth vs. owl perception. Earthwing’s perception was insufficient to catch the 20-stealth attacker.
  7. Type your inventory adjustments on D&D Beyond: Terry showed Hugo you can type “-3” in the field (Hugo had been doing manual subtraction). Mechanical-but-funny moment.
  8. Bonus action ranged attack while charmed: Harvo confirmed he can use a bonus-action cannon attack against the dominator even while charmed forbids spending action against them. Allowed.

Callbacks

  • s7: Direct continuation. Vasquez in jail, urn-woman fled with the party, Whisper Coil purchases (incense, healing potions, Vasquez’s bubbly potion), Glomangol stay. Hugo’s Wraith dream is referenced.
  • s7: The Broker’s mining quest accepted at end of s7 is now being fulfilled.
  • s7: Vasquez’s mask-stitching backstory revealed in s7 to Terry; this session, Vasquez tightens his mask cloth so it can never happen again.
  • s7: Hugo’s +50 gp from Maelis’s contract spent over the course of these sessions.
  • s5: Wither and Bloom scroll referenced (already cast in s7).
  • s3: Earthwing the Owlin (one-shot replacement PC) namesake re-used as Terry’s owl familiar.

Next Steps

  • Survive the quarry-ghost encounter (continues into s9 — the post-Christmas session).
  • Determine why the miners are still bound to the rock and what they’re searching for.
  • Identify what stealth-killed Earthwing.
  • Return to Risa with quarry intelligence.
  • Eventually investigate the Dawn Mercy Clinic.
  • Long-deferred: deliver forged Duskwatch ledger to Silent Intake in Velkris.
