Session 7 is the seventh recorded session and contains both the climax of the Maelis Dirn arc and the catalyst for the next: the Titan turns on its mistress and pummels her into paste, the party loots the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring and a Greataxe of Frost +1, the Broker hires them for a missing-miners job in the Black Vein Quarry, and a street-level confrontation with two corrupt Nightwatch guards over a woman’s urn ends with Vasquez arrested and the rest of the party fleeing through the rain.

Executive Summary
The Titan boss fight resumed. After a savage Round 12 in which Maelis Dirn crit Vasquez (who self-revived on a death-save nat 20) and crushed Caelumn for 42 (saved by a Shield + Silvery Barbs combo), Maelis used her ring to mark Vasquez and command the Titan toward him. Hugo destroyed the third and fourth fungal nodes, and Caelumn’s Wither and Bloom scroll let Vasquez burn a hit die for self-healing. Hugo, finally finishing the fifth node, weakened the Titan enough that — rather than rampaging — the Titan turned on Maelis and pummelled her to paste with a nat 20 + 19. The party looted the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring and a Greataxe of Frost from her remains, returned to the Broker for payment, were referred to Silent Intake in Velkris over the forged shipping ledger, took on a missing-miners side quest, slept at the Glomangol Inn, heard from The Wraith in Hugo’s dream, then bought potions at the Whisper Coil Emporium (during which Vasquez drank a glowing-green experimental potion that produced bio-luminescent meeping bubbles). On exit, the party intervened in a Nightwatch shakedown of an urn-woman, started a street fight, knocked out one guard, and Vasquez was arrested when the second guard’s flare summoned reinforcements. Session ended with Vasquez in jail, the rest fleeing.
Narrative
The Titan boss continued. Recap delivered by Caelumn at session start. The fight resumed in Round 12. Vasquez rolled a death save nat 20 and re-told (Bob-prompted) a memory of Vasquez’s mentor — the smithing-elf youth backstory — for inspiration. Caelumn’s Witch Bolt lapsed when the Titan went down. Maelis Dirn finally engaged directly, firing two-rays-per-turn arcane bursts at exposed targets through her shimmering damage-resistant barrier. Hugo sprinted (still on his 80’-movement vision-buff from s06) through the maze killing fungal nodes one at a time. The party’s healing potions ran out fast: Terry poured a greater healing potion (14 HP) into Vasquez’s chest cavity to revive him, then on subsequent turns simply chewed through 1st-level slots true-strike-shooting Maelis from range with his light crossbow.
The breakthrough was Caelumn’s Wither and Bloom scroll, found in s5: cast in the centre of the Titan-chamber, it allowed Vasquez to spend a hit die to heal in-combat (rolled 9 HP). When Hugo cleared the fifth node, the Titan rose larger and angrier than before — but it took one look at Maelis Dirn through the ring she was using to control it, declared “no more”, and slammed her with two boulders. The first did 15 bludgeoning. The second was a nat 20 for 34. Maelis was reduced to “a fine mist into the ground” [8]. The Titan shrunk, looked at Hugo “before disappearing forever” [9]. The combat ended.
Terry and Hugo investigated the paste; with advantage from Hugo’s help, an 11 + advantage Investigation found Maelis’s coin purse (50 gp), 2 vials of bio-gloom toxin, and a strange ring, cracked, emanating magical properties. Hugo took the ring to the Broker as proof.
The Broker paid out. Returning to the Black Hollow Market, the Broker greeted them: “Ah, splendid. Proof of completion?” [10]. Hugo presented the ring. The Broker recognised it as a Soulbinder’s Packed Ring (a homebrew variant Maelis had personalised), and paid 50 gp + 2 bio-gloom toxins as agreed. He then unwrapped a Greataxe of Frost +1 from his bag of holding and offered it to Hugo: “I’m assuming you, sir, are the one that wants this.” [11]. Hugo described showing the forged Duskwatch ledger to the Broker, reasoning his own organisation might not value it; the Broker explained the documents could fetch a heavy reward in Velkris if presented to Silent Intake, the counterfeit-document organisation, located near “the Talking Skulls” entrance to Velkris [12]. The Broker also offered a sending stone for future contracts — Hugo accepted.
The Broker offered a follow-up job: the Umbrafall Mining Company had lost contact with miners working a recently-discovered rare ore in the Black Vein Quarry, a day-and-a-half’s travel north. Reward: 100 gp. Last sighting: roughly three weeks ago. The party debated and unanimously took the job (Hugo and Caelumn voted yes, Vasquez and Terry agreed). Hugo: “I’ll just mention how he would be able to get in contact with us… no, scratch that, give me a sending stone.” Done.
Long rest at The Glomangol Inn. Hugo led the party to the Glomangol — a known safer tavern in the lower-fog district Wane Quarter, far enough from the Black Hollow Market that the Nightwatch rarely patrolled, with a sign painted with a bioluminescent mushroom and a two-headed serpent and the rule-board: no Venenberg inside, no Nightwatch business inside, no killing over coin, everything else negotiable [13]. Hugo negotiated 5 gp/room down from 15 gp/room (Persuasion 16). Discovering Maelis’s death from the bartender’s reaction prompted free venison stew on the house (“Show me proof or you bullshitter” → Terry produced the ring → “Well I must say I am very impressed… dinner is on me”). They long-rested in two paired rooms.
The Wraith dream (Hugo-only). Hugo found himself in a dark alley facing a familiar female figure - the Wraith, his Project sister/colleague: “Subject. Status report.” The dream was Hugo-only - no other PC perceived or shared the encounter. Hugo reported the Titan eliminated, Maelis dead, and showed her the ring. The Wraith said: “Parameters accepted… The project seems to have worries about your loyalties changing. Something about their leash weakening on you?” Hugo (Deception roll passed) replied his pull was as strong as ever. The Wraith departed: “Lean in closer. Stick with the group. Learn what you can. We’ll be in touch.” [5].
Whisper Coil Emporium. In the morning, the party went to the Whisper Coil Emporium for restock. The shopkeeper — a shifty blonde-shaved-haired dwarf with one eye replaced by a bioluminescent fungal orb — sold healing potions at 50 gp each. Caelumn negotiated: “Hugo asked if it was a long-standing customer; the dwarf replied ‘I opened just last month’” [14]. Hugo persuaded for a discount that didn’t quite stick. The dwarf instead offered an experimental bio-gloom-tinged potion: “Mixed it a bit with some Bioglum. I don’t know what it does. If you test it for me, I’ll give you the healing potions for 200 gold… actually, 150 gold” [15]. Vasquez volunteered. After uncertainty, Harvo intervened with a separate trade: he offered the rare bio-gloom mushroom-cap-jar from the Warrens, which the dwarf eagerly accepted in exchange for 5 healing potions. Harvo got the better deal by far (“ripped off the shopkeeper” — DM acknowledged Hugo’s check). Vasquez had already drunk the experimental potion — bio-gloom bubbles “meep!” trailing from his skin every 5 feet for the next hour, glowing dim green. No other detectable effect. Caelumn pulled a “blast shield” from his pack just in case [16].
The Nightwatch street confrontation. Exiting the Emporium, the party witnessed two Nightwatch guards trying to drag a metal urn from a young woman ("Risa" — name not given this session). She begged the party for help: “It’s the last thing I have of her” [17]. Hugo declined to help directly (“I probably stay out of it because not everything every group does is fully legal” — [18]. Vasquez, fresh from his backstory-confrontation moment, did intervene. Caelumn stepped forward: “the dead are sacred, you should know that, and it is not your business taking the dead away from their family” [19]. The guards drew swords. Initiative.
The street fight (5 rounds, partial). Vasquez gunblade-shot one guard (called “elf” repeatedly, much to Vasquez’s escalating fury). Caelumn twin-spell upcast Chromatic Orb at 3rd level (advantage from Innate Sorcery), bouncing for 21 + 17 lightning damage onto both guards. Hugo (after lengthy debate about whether intervention would compromise his Project obligations) waded in and threw two handaxes for 7 + 14 damage. The guards retaliated: Vasquez was downed by a 19 hit for 19 slashing damage in Round 1. The remaining guard attempted to throw up a flare-explosion (purple); Terry cast Tasha’s Hideous Laughter to incapacitate him (DC 13 Wisdom; the guard rolled 8 — the spell, for once, worked, putting the guard prone for one round before the guard saved on a 19 the following round and rose). Caelumn shifted target. Hugo ranged-axed the Tasha’s-affected guard down to 1 HP; ran over and KO’d him with a third axe.
The session’s pivotal failure: with the urn-woman frozen in the alley as Terry tried to shout her into running, the second guard regained consciousness mid-cycle and immediately stab-killed the still-prone Vasquez again (Caelumn had healed him with a spell scroll Cure Wounds for 14, but the healing was wasted within 30 seconds). The flare had summoned reinforcements (within ~6 seconds, per the DM: a “very short response time”). Hugo wrapped a scarf around his face and dashed away. Caelumn altered self and fled. Vasquez declared he was “fully prepared to take on the consequences” of his actions. Terry hid stealth-13 against a wall. The session closed with Vasquez being dragged away by reinforcements while the rest of the party reformed in an alleyway, shaken, with Risa in tow.
Dialogue Highlights
- Maelis Dirn to Vasquez, post-crushing-his-chest: “Real power, is it?” [20]
- The Titan, after Hugo destroys node 5: “No more.” [21]
- The Broker, identifying Maelis’s ring: “Oh, it is refreshing to see someone that doesn’t know what this is. Yes, this right here is a very, very rare piece of magical equipment called a soulbinder ring.” [22]
- The Broker, recommending future contact: “If you ever need me, just press this little sending stone and it’ll give me a little bit of a ring.” [23]
- Hugo, on his organisation: “I might get in trouble for this with my organisation, but for such a generous gift of the axe, I guess I can show you them.” [24]
- The Wraith to Hugo: “Subject. Status report.” / “The project seems to have worries about your loyalties changing. Something about their leash weakening on you?”
- Vasquez, in jail-bound silence at session end (paraphrased — the line is Hugo and Caelumn discussing the in-game cost): “I’m fully prepared to take on the consequences.”
- Risa (the urn-woman): “I got it from the Dawn Mercy’s clinic. My sister went in because she was feeling ill. And then they contacted me and said that she died.” [foreshadowing only this session — the actual word “Dawn Mercy” is delivered in s08]
- Vasquez to a Nightwatch guard who called him an elf (twice): “Call me anything you want. You can even call me daddy. I don’t care.”
- Caelumn, after his Chromatic Orb tags both guards in a thunderstrike bounce: “Get firebolted, bitch!” (well, Chromatic Orb — but Caelumn uses these terms interchangeably).
NPCs
- Maelis Dirn (aliases: Malus, Maelis Dirn, Coven Filth): killed this session by her own Titan. Status: deceased. Disposition: was hostile. Faction: Warrens / shipping operation. New: no (introduced s4, engaged s6). Last seen: s07.
- The Titan: dispelled / faded. Recognised Hugo at end of fight. Status: gone (likely soul released; mechanically removed from play). New: no (intro s6). Last seen: s07.
- The Broker: paid the contract; offered the Greataxe of Frost; introduced Silent Intake; gave the mining quest; supplied a sending stone. New: no (s4). Last seen: s07.
- The Glomangol bartender: 40s elf, dark hair shaved on sides, one eye replaced with a fungal orb. Bartender of the Glomangol Inn in the lower-fog district Wane Quarter. Charged 5 gp/room (negotiated down from 15). Had been “fallen out again” with Maelis; gave free dinner once Maelis’s death was confirmed. New: yes.
- The Whisper Coil dwarf (shifty blonde-shaved-haired dwarf, fungal eye-orb): proprietor of the Whisper Coil Emporium, opened “just last month”. Sells healing potions at 50 gp; experiments with bio-gloum-tinged variants. Got the worse end of Harvo’s mushroom-cap trade. New: yes.
- Risa (the urn-woman): not yet named this session. Sister allegedly cremated at the Dawn Mercy clinic; ash is suspicious. Now following the party. New: yes.
- The Nightwatch guards (two): corrupt, racist (called Vasquez “elf” with hard R), drew swords on the party for interfering. One killed Vasquez once (revived); the other dragged Vasquez away after backup arrived. New: yes (Nightwatch as faction).
- The Wraith (Hugo’s Project colleague): female, no insignia, telepathic, appeared in Hugo’s dream in an alley. Loyal to “the project”. New: yes (first dream-appearance).
Locations
- The Warrens (central Titan chamber): where Maelis died. The channeling-circle node has dimmed and gone ineffective. The Titan-icon glyph remains.
- Black Hollow Market (Broker’s stall): deal made for the Greataxe; Silent Intake reveal; mining quest accepted.
- The Glomangol Inn: the safer-than-most tavern in the lower-fog district Wane Quarter; rule-board (“no Venenberg inside…”); 5 gp/room with persuasion. Two-headed-serpent + mushroom sign over the door.
- Whisper Coil Emporium: small healing-potion shop adjacent to (but not inside) the Black Hollow Market. Run by a dwarf; “opened just last month.” Bio-gloum experimental potions for sale.
- Umbrafall street outside Whisper Coil: site of the Nightwatch ambush. Flare summoned reinforcements within ~6 seconds.
- Black Vein Quarry: not yet visited; mentioned as a day-and-a-half’s travel north of Umbrafall for the mining quest.
Items & Loot
- Soulbinder’s Packed Ring (homebrew): looted from Maelis’s remains. Identified by the Broker, then again by Harvo at the Inn. Can store the soul of a creature you reduced to 0 HP; later summon a CR-equivalent ally for 5 rounds. Caelumn took it for attunement during the long rest (Terry passed it along on the basis that “it needs to be someone with spell slot progression”).
- Greataxe of Frost +1: gifted by the Broker to Hugo. Hugo deliberately did not attune this session (“I am keeping it as a generous gift, but I am not attuning to it” — [25].
- 2 vials of bio-gloom toxin: from Maelis’s coin purse and the Broker’s payment. In the party stash.
- 50 gp: from Maelis’s purse.
- +50 gp: from the Broker’s contract payment.
- 5 healing potions (regular, 50 gp each): bought from Whisper Coil at a 250 gp valuation; Harvo traded the bio-gloom mushroom-cap-jar to get them for free (worth ~150 gp).
- 5 incense (sets): bought by Terry for 5 gp total (1 gp each), for repeated Find Familiar attempts. (Will not have time to ritual cast in s07; tries in s08.)
- Mysterious bio-gloum-experimental potion: drunk by Vasquez. Effect: emits glowing-green bioluminescent bubbles every ~5 feet, popping with a soft “meep!”, lasting roughly 1 hour. No combat or stat effects observed.
- Sending stone: gifted by the Broker to Hugo for future contracts.
- Glomangol Inn payment: 7 gp/room x 2 rooms = 14 gp (negotiated down from 15 each → 7 each); free dinner.
Currency split rough total: +50 gp from contract, +50 gp from Maelis loot, -250 gp on potions/incense in negotiations, with Harvo’s trade saving ~150 gp.

Clues & Foreshadowing
- The Titan recognised Hugo before disappearing. Hugo and the Titan share a Project Veilbreak / Ascendancy origin. The Wraith later confirmed Hugo’s connection to “the project” with worry about his loyalties.
- Risa’s sister and the Dawn Mercy Clinic: the urn-woman’s claim — log time inconsistencies — strongly suggests cover-up. The actual “Dawn Mercy” name is not delivered until session 8, but the seed is here. Cared about: Caelumn (most strongly), Hugo, Terry.
- Silent Intake (Velkris counterfeit organisation): named by Broker. Located near “the Talking Skulls” in Velkris. The forged Duskwatch ledger could be sold to them for major reward.
- The Titan’s behavior on death: it shrunk, looked at Hugo “before disappearing forever.” Suggests souls in Maelis’s binding were released, not destroyed.
- The Wraith’s loyalty check: Hugo passed Deception, but the project is monitoring “leash weakening” — they suspect.
Open Mysteries & Unanswered Questions
- Who is “Dawn Mercy” really and what are they doing with bodies? Best evidence: log discrepancies; lye-smelling ash (revealed s8). Cared about: Caelumn, Risa.
- What’s in the urn? Best evidence (s7): not really ash. Hugo stuck the lid back on.
- What are Maelis’s deepest motives — bio-gloum smuggling for what? Best evidence: forged ledger through Duskwatch toward Velkris. Cared about: Hugo, the Broker.
- Where will Vasquez end up in the jail? Will the Nightwatch question him about his backstory / mask?
Quests
- [completed] Kill Maelis Dirn for the Broker: paid (50 gp + 2 bio-gloom toxin + Greataxe of Frost +1).
- [active, new] The Black Vein Quarry / Umbrafall Mining Company: investigate why ~3-week-missing miners haven’t returned from the rare-ore site. Reward: 100 gp. 1.5-day travel north.
- [active, new] Silent Intake / Duskwatch shipping ledger (Velkris): the forged documents could fetch significant reward in Velkris if delivered to Silent Intake near the Talking Skulls. Held by Hugo.
- [active] Risa’s missing sister: party has effectively committed to investigating after the urn-woman followed them. (The full Dawn Mercy reveal is in s8.)
- [active, paused] Hugo’s pact with Black Mask: ring works, demonic-blade trigger active.
- [active, urgent] Bail Vasquez out of Nightwatch jail: emergent at session end.
Faction & Relationship Changes
- Maelis Dirn dead. The Warrens is leaderless.
- The Broker’s reputation with the party advances: sending stone gifted, Greataxe gifted, party now in his recommend-network for Velkris.
- The Glomangol bartender is an ally-of-circumstance; will give discounts to party post-Maelis.
- The Whisper Coil dwarf has been ripped off; possibly hostile if the trade is reviewed.
- Hugo’s Project (the Ascendancy) suspects loyalty drift; the Wraith is now informed of Maelis’s death.
- The Nightwatch is now actively hunting at least one party member (Hugo never identified; Caelumn altered self before fleeing; Vasquez captured).
- Risa (urn-woman): party owes her assistance.
Table Rulings
- Drinking a healing potion with action-surge / two actions in one turn: Harvo asked if he could use his action to drink while the bonus-action was already used; DM ruled it allowable in this circumstance (“yeah I’ll allow you to, that seems a bit too much” otherwise). Future-relevant: drinking is generally bonus action; under exceptional circumstances, action acceptable.
- You can hold an action across rounds via reaction: confirmed for Vasquez; reaction must trigger on a specific cue.
- Twin Spell + Chromatic Orb bounce: Twin Spell does not upcast the spell (third clarification this campaign). Chromatic Orb’s bounce does not impose disadvantage even when targets aren’t in line of sight, per DM ruling this session.
- Witch Bolt concentration ends when target outside range: confirmed; Caelumn lost 3rd-level Witch Bolt when the Titan walked behind a wall.
- Forced movement (Eldritch Cannon push) is mandatory, re-affirmed yet again.
- Jim’s Magic Missile (homebrew variant from Acquisitions Inc.): rolls to hit, but if rolls a 1 the spell backfires. Terry’s preferred variant.
Callbacks
- s6: Direct continuation. The Titan, Maelis, the maze, Hugo’s 80’-movement vision-buff (still active for first half of session), Caelumn’s exhaustion, the mind-control bookshelf (referenced but not visited).
- s5: Wither and Bloom scroll finally cast. The bio-gloum mushroom-cap-jar finally traded.
- s4: Hugo’s pact with Black Mask; the Broker as pact-broker introduced. Black Mask ring still cannot be removed; Hugo telepathically sends “we need to talk later” through the ring (Black Mask giggled).
- s4: Maelis Dirn was originally introduced as the Broker’s contract target; the contract is now closed.
- s3: Death-at-Sunset’s egg still glows green (not directly referenced this session but session-context).
Next Steps
- Bail or break Vasquez out of the Nightwatch jail.
- Continue to the Black Vein Quarry for the missing miners.
- Investigate the Dawn Mercy / urn-woman conspiracy.
- (Eventually) deliver the forged Duskwatch ledger to Silent Intake in Velkris.
- Find a way for Hugo to maintain Project cover while the Wraith watches.
