Session 7 is the seventh recorded session and holds both the climax of the Maelis Dirn arc and the catalyst for the next. When the last fungal node falls, The Titan grows stronger, turns on its mistress and pounds her into a fine mist [25][1]. The party takes the cracked Soulbinder’s Packed Ring from her remains [27], and The Broker pays the contract, adds a Greataxe of Frost +1 for Hugo, judges Maelis’s shipping papers to be old fakes worth something to Silent Intake in Velkris, and hires the party to find missing miners to the north [3]. After a night at the Glomangol Inn and a visit from The Wraith to Hugo [10][11], a street confrontation with two Nightwatch guards over a young woman’s urn ends with Vasquez knocked out and left to the Nightwatch while the rest of the party scatters [176][34][35].

Nick filled in what he had missed, “weird coins that seemed to have stamps from the Nightwatch” and “papers that seemed to have been forged” [15], and that they were part-way through killing the third node [16]. He told Caelumn to stop reading Terry’s AI-generated slides, wrong “like half the time” [17], but praised the recap [16].

Executive Summary

The Titan fight resumed where session 6 had stopped. From behind a shimmering barrier Maelis Dirn caved in Vasquez’s chest and blasted Terry for 30, while the Titan buried Harvo in boulders [18][19][20][21], and Terry, healing Vasquez, saw the scarred face under his mask [22]. Hugo and his stand-in cut down the last three fungal nodes [23][24][25]. As the last one died the Titan grew larger and stronger, defied Maelis’s ring and pounded her into a fine mist, then looked at Hugo “like he knows you” and vanished [26]. From her remains the party took a coin purse, two biogloom toxins and a cracked Soulbinder’s Packed Ring [27]. The Broker paid out, gave Hugo a Greataxe of Frost +1 and a sending stone, told them Maelis’s shipping papers were old fakes that Silent Intake in Velkris would pay for, and hired them to find missing miners to the north [3][28]. At the Glomangol Inn news of Maelis’s death bought them dinner [29], and in the night The Wraith met Hugo in an alley for a status report [30]. At the Whisper Coil Emporium Vasquez drank an experimental biogloom potion and Harvo traded his biogloom jar for five healing potions [31]. Outside, two Nightwatch guards were seizing a young woman’s urn; the party fought them, and Vasquez, knocked out twice, was left to the Nightwatch as the rest scattered [32][33][34][35].

Narrative

Dylan was missing at the start, so Terry ran Hugo through the maze while the others faced the Titan and Maelis [36]. Vasquez’s strike at Maelis glanced off a shimmering barrier, and she sneered at it [37]. Nick told Harvo that under the new rules his cannon had to be created within 5 feet of him; Harvo argued that it could then move on its own, and Nick accepted that, so long as it stayed within 60 feet [38][39]. Terry, playing Hugo, cut down the third node, and the Titan’s shadows thinned [40]; Nick also corrected Hugo’s reading of his subclass, whose bonus needs damage to a hostile creature [23][41].

Maelis then put her hand on Vasquez’s chest, “so real power is it”, and magic erupted from her fingertips, caving it in for 18 force [42]. Caelumn’s Shield turned her next bolt into a Minotaur statue’s hand, which cracked and crumbled [43]. The Titan buried Harvo under two boulders for 17 and 16 [44], and Caelumn spent a potion to bring him round [45]. When the Titan and Maelis both turned on Caelumn, his Shield turned aside two blows and two arcane bursts in a single round, damage Nick put at 11, 13, 14 and 19 [46].

Terry crept over to Vasquez on a natural-20 Stealth check and poured a healing potion into him for 7 [47][48]. As he did, he saw what the mask hides: stitches around Vasquez’s lips, and a large scar from under his nose round his jawline, as if from an explosion, held together with metal straps [49]. Terry covered him up again and told him: “You have a very lovely mouth, sir.” [50]

Caelumn’s Fire Bolt pierced Maelis’s barrier for a single point of damage: “Get Firebolted, bitch!” [51] The barrier blunted Harvo’s cannon and Terry’s True Strike as well [52][53], and Terry wondered aloud whether they were meant to win at all: one enemy regenerated everything they did to it and the other took no damage [54]. Hugo’s natural 20 left a fourth cluster flickering [55]. When Vasquez’s sword stopped on the barrier again, Maelis looked down at him: “you really are pathetic” [56]. Vasquez: “I’ve been called worse at least I don’t look like a hag.” [57] She promised he would pay for that, elf [58].

Hugo finished the fourth cluster and found where the last one lay [59][60]. Maelis raised a glowing ring towards the Titan and marked Vasquez for it, “crush him”, and its fists put him down for 26 [61]; its move also broke line of sight and ended Caelumn’s Witch Bolt [62]. Maelis turned on Terry, “Dinner time, turtle”, and her second blast was a natural 20 for 30 force that cracked his shell [63]. Bleeding out, Vasquez was asked for a memory of failure, and told of the charge that blew up in his face and left his jaw wired shut for months [64]. The Titan threw Caelumn back over a wall for 18 [65], and Maelis hunted Terry down a dead end, missing twice: “I do so like toying with my meals” [66].

Harvo’s turret put the Titan on its knees once more, the mushrooms sprouted in front of Hugo, and his reckless strike for 16 destroyed the last cluster [67].

Terry shouted where Maelis was, and her barrier faded: “No, no, what have you done?” [69] Vasquez rolled his second natural-20 death save of the fight and, asked for a moment of triumph, remembered his mentor at the forge, when everyone around him mocked the little elf who thought he was a dwarf [70].

“That’s a point that I’d be proud of, boy. Keep it up. Keep making that point as sharp as possible. One day, you’ll be just as good a Smith as I.” — Vasquez, as his mentor, [71]

Nick gave him inspiration [72]. The Titan came round the corner faster than ever; Maelis pointed her ring at it, and it looked at her: “No more” [8]. It slammed her twice, for 15 and then a natural 20 for 34 [73].

As the combat ended the Titan shrank and calmed, took one last look at Hugo, “like he knows you” [75], and disappeared for good, and Hugo’s speed went with it [76]. The fight had run to about twenty rounds in all [77]. Terry, with Hugo helping, searched what was left and found a coin purse of about 50 gold, two vials of biogloom toxin and a cracked ring that radiated magic, which would be proof enough for the Broker [78]; Hugo let Terry keep the ring [79]. The channelling circle had gone dim [80], and the party walked out past Maelis’s monstrosities into the streets of Umbrafall [81]. There was no level up [82][83].

At the Black Hollow Market the Broker asked: “So, have you come to collect your reward?” [9] Shown the ring, he recognised it and paid as promised, 50 gold and two more vials of biogloom toxin, then drew from a bag of holding a large curved axe with fungus woven into it by magic: “I’m assuming you, sir, are the one that wants this.” [84] It was a greataxe of frost [85]. Moved by the gift, Hugo risked his organisation’s displeasure and showed him the shipping papers [86]. Maelis had been exporting biogloom toxin through Duskwatch into Velkris, the Broker read; the documents were “fakes, as anyone could see” and relatively old, but Silent Intake, Velkris’s counterfeit-document dealers, might reward the party for them and perhaps hire them [87]. He named the ring a soulbinder ring to which Maelis had added “her own personal twist” [88], told them to look for the Talking Skulls near the entrance to Velkris [89], and gave Hugo a sending stone [90].

Then he offered another job: the Umbrafall Mining Company had lost the miners working a rare ore a bit north of Umbrafall, last seen about three weeks ago, and would pay 100 gold to have them recovered [91][28][92]. It was a day’s travel north, away from Eldwythe and the next dragon, but Caelumn and Terry voted yes and Hugo agreed [93][94][95]. The Broker marked a route through the moss field, the death zone and past the Illusionary Pit to a small quarry, the Black Vein Quarry [96][97], and confirmed that the Maelis job also bought them untaxed passage [98]. Asked for an inn, he named the Glomangol, the Farkjaw, the Blackroot Cask and the Shiver Light Den, and warned them off the Hollow Ember [99]. Vasquez: “I need brokers, just like I need another hole in the head.” [100]

Hugo led them to the Glomangol Inn, down an alley in the Wane Quarter, near enough the market to serve smugglers and poison brokers but on a street the Nightwatch rarely patrols, under a sign of a glowing mushroom cap and a two-headed serpent; its rule board read “no Nightwatch business inside, no killing over coin, everything else negotiable” [101]. The bartender, an elf with one eye replaced by a glowing fungal orb, asked 15 gold for two rooms [102][103]; Terry’s History check put a normal room at about 5 gold, and Hugo, pointing out that the place was under half full, talked him down to 7 on a Persuasion of 16 [104]. Told in a whisper that the party had killed Maelis, the bartender called it a lie until Terry showed him the ring, then put dinner and drinks on the house [105]. Hugo declined to attune to the axe [106]. Harvo identified it and the ring, which Nick added as the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring: it can store the soul of something they have killed [107]. Terry passed the ring to Caelumn, since it needs a spellcaster, and Caelumn attuned to it during the rest [108][109].

After everyone had gone to bed, Hugo found himself in a dark alley, in what seemed very real rather than a dream [110].

“Subject. Status report.” — The Wraith (Nick, DM), [11]

There was no insignia, but the feel of her was the project’s [111]. Hugo reported the Titan and Maelis dead and showed what he had picked up of her; “Parameters accepted,” and the Wraith asked how Maelis had recovered the Titan’s body [112]. Then: “The project seems to have worries about your allegiance changing. Something about their leash weakening on you?” [113] Hugo answered that his pull to complete their missions felt as strong as ever, and Nick ruled that this was the truth, not a deception; she told him to lean in closer, stick with the group, learn what he could, and wait for word [114]. He woke in his bed without knowing how he had got back, having slipped out through the window [114][115]. Nick later told him that the two had once been on equal footing, but the project had put more into developing the Wraith [116]. In the morning Hugo whispered into his ring, “Black Mask, we need to talk later”, and heard a slight giggle [117]. Vasquez, seen at last, tied his mask on tighter and kept an eye on the turtle [118].

Hugo took the party to the Whisper Coil Emporium, a small shop beside the Black Hollow Market, run by a dwarf “who has shaved blonde hair with these very shifty eyes” [119]. Healing potions were 50 gold each [120][121]. Hugo claimed to have shopped there for years; the dwarf had opened “just last month” [122]. Terry bought five sets of incense for Find Familiar for 7 gold [123]. Offered a discount on five potions if someone would test an experimental brew mixed with biogloom, Vasquez turned his face away and drank it, and “floating bioluminescent bubbles” began shedding from his skin, each popping with a soft “Meep!” and giving off a dim green light [124]. Nothing else happened that anyone could see, and Caelumn held up a blast shield just in case [125]. Harvo then cut his own deal, trading the biogloom jar from Maelis’s desk and his samples of the fungal creature for the five potions; the dwarf giggled at “these idiots”, but Nick confirmed it was Harvo who had ripped him off [126].

Outside, two night watchmen were trying to pull a small bundle from a frightened young woman of about 20: “Please, don’t take it. It’s the last thing I have of her.” [127] It was an urn holding her sister’s remains [128][129]. The Nightwatch, Nick reminded them, are Umbrafall’s police and serve whoever pays them most [130]. Hugo stayed out of it for his organisation’s sake [131][132], but Vasquez read the woman as genuine and stepped forward, and Caelumn told the guards that the dead are sacred [133]. The guards answered that the urn was contaminated, city property that had to be destroyed, and drew their swords [134].

Vasquez loaded four charges and shot the guard who had called him an elf for 5 and 7 fire, then answered his next insult with a wink [135]. Terry’s crossbow took the same guard in the bicep [136], and Caelumn’s 3rd-level Chromatic Orb, lightning because Nick would not allow force, leapt between both guards on matching dice [137]. Hugo asked what fighting the Nightwatch would cost him (“They get wanted”) and then threw his handaxes for 7 and 14 [138]. The guards cut Vasquez down for 20 and 19 and announced they would hold him for questioning [139]. Terry’s Tasha’s Hideous Laughter dropped one guard laughing, and the other threw up a flare that burst purple over the street [140]; reinforcements would be closer to 30 seconds away than a minute [141]. Caelumn’s Witch Bolt and Hugo’s axes knocked one guard out [142], but the other shook off the laughter on a 19 and got back up [143]. The woman, frozen until Terry shouted at her, finally ran [144]. Harvo never rolled initiative; he was browsing the street vendors [145].

Caelumn weighed slipping away under Alter Self against saving Vasquez [146], then spent his free Cure Wounds on him for 14 and dashed [147][148]. Vasquez said he was “fully prepared to take on the consequences” [149]. As the woman ran past, Hugo saw a standard metal urn with a stamp on which he could make out the word “mercy” [150]; he wrapped a cloth around his head and ran, and she followed him [151]. The standing guard knocked Vasquez out again and went to check on his partner [152]. With no one going back for Vasquez, Nick let the rest find each other and the woman, to pick up next session [153]. Caelumn promised Vasquez a jailbreak: “We’ll get you out, bro” [154]. Afterwards Nick pointed out that they could have threatened, persuaded, bribed or distracted the guards instead [155], and Vasquez said that the fight with the giant and the witch had flipped a switch in him [156].
