Session 11 is the eleventh recorded session of the campaign. The party left Umbrafall for Eldwythe and met Thomas Feld and his eight-year-old daughter on the road, who warned them away from the “berry figgets” and the “big pigs”. Camped that night in defiance of the warning, the party was ambushed by three owlbears; Hugo flew Caelumn’s downed body out of the engagement using his Winged Boots, and Caelumn captured one of the owlbear souls in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring at fourth-level slot. Vasquez (and his player Polar) were absent this session. Terry confirmed at the table that his next level-up will be his Bladesinger pick.

Executive Summary

A travel-and-combat session. The party stocked rations and potions in Umbrafall (after Ruin’s failed theft from Starpoint Secrets doubled the prices) and headed east toward Eldwythe. On the road they met Thomas Feld, his wife, and their eight-year-old daughter at a broken-down cart; Caelumn helped repair the axle while the daughter chattily warned them about “the berry figgets” and “big pigs”. That night the party ignored the warning and camped near the brush; three owlbears ambushed them, separating Caelumn (who had wandered 120 feet away searching for firewood) from the camp. Hugo used his newly-acquired Winged Boots to airlift Caelumn out of the encounter mid-combat; Caelumn cast Burning Hands at level 2, Ruin used his upgraded Witch Bolt (now deals damage on subsequent rounds even after initial miss), and Hugo killed two of the three owlbears with his great-axe. Caelumn captured one owlbear’s soul in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring (4th-level slot). Polar (Vasquez’s player) was absent; Vasquez did not appear in the session at all.

Narrative

The session opened with table-talk on magic-item picks. Following Sevryn’s out-of-game gift of one uncommon item per player, Hugo confirmed he had taken Winged Boots (one-hour increments per the 2024 nerf), Terry confirmed Cloak of Protection, Caelumn picked the Bloodwell Vial, and the party noted Caelumn had previously taken Dragonslayer Longsword in s3. Terry confirmed his next level will be his Bladesinger subclass pick; Hugo discussed a possible homebrew rebalance to his Void-Touched subclass.

Polar had let the table know he wouldn’t be joining; Vasquez simply does not appear in the session. The remaining four — Terry, Hugo, Caelumn, and Ruin — woke at the Glomangol Inn (or its functional equivalent) and went down for breakfast. The skinny innkeeper served oats so dense the spoon stood upright; Caelumn paid 10 silver and rolled a d100 for whether the food poisoned him (44, no — and it gave him advantage on Constitution saves for 24 hours). The innkeeper recommended Starpoint Secrets for potions.

Starpoint Secrets was run by a fairy with shaved purple hair and a pot belly. Ruin tried to steal a red potion while Caelumn negotiated; the fairy noticed mid-attempt, pointed up at a string of severed hands of various races strung from the ceiling, and immediately raised the price by 60gp per potion in retaliation [7]. The party left empty-handed.

They walked two-to-three hours through Umbrafall’s streets to the Whisper Coil Emporium (the dwarf-run potion shop they had visited previously). Re-establishing rapport, Caelumn purchased two healing potions at 49gp each (90gp negotiated for two), Ruin volunteered to trial an experimental blue potion in exchange for a free healing potion — drinking it paralysed him for ten minutes and gave him one level of exhaustion [8]. The shopkeeper introduced himself as Alston and asked the party to take a black experimental potion to test on someone else and report back. Caelumn accepted and pocketed it.

The party left Umbrafall east and walked into clean air for the first time in days. Ruin missed a survival check trying to firebolt a bird for lunch. Two hours into the walk they came upon a tipped handcart and a man straining against the axle. Caelumn inspected the cart (nat 20 Investigation), diagnosed the axle as cracked but reparable, and helped the man fix it while the eight-year-old daughter chatted with the party. The daughter’s name went uncalled; she was the only one to give a name (Lysa, by her mother), and she introduced Ruin as “Ruin”, Terry as “Shelly McShoutface” (Ruin’s joke), Caelumn as “Callum”, and Hugo as Hugo. Thomas Feld introduced himself by name and warned the party explicitly: “near Aurelian territory, would keep the theatrics to a minimum if I was you” — i.e. don’t use magic in the open. He also warned them off the “berry figgets” and the “big pigs”. He confirmed that Aurelians hunted the chromatic dragons together with Vhal’Zarim and that there are no chromatic dragons left on this side of the world to find.

The party walked another couple of hours and made camp in a clearing well away from any berry bushes. Watch order: CaelumnHugoRuinTerry. On Caelumn’s watch, he sought firewood at “the edge of the woods” but was kited 120 feet away by the DM. As Caelumn lit a torch, three owlbears emerged in pursuit. He extinguished the flame and fled toward the camp; one was already on him by the second round. The party rolled initiative; Caelumn cast a level 2 Burning Hands at all three (3D6, 45 damage split, all three failed Dex 14 saves), then disengaged. Hugo activated his Winged Boots for the first major use, raged, and threw a hand-axe (the second axe in subsequent turns). When Caelumn dropped to 0HP after a third owlbear flanked him, Hugo flew down 10 feet, picked up Caelumn’s 65.5-pound body in one arm, and lifted them both back to 20 feet of altitude while continuing to throw axes [9]. Ruin used Witch Bolt (the buffed 2024 version: it deals lightning damage on subsequent rounds even if the initial attack misses, per [10], Hellish Rebuke, Eldritch Blast, and (with one bonus action) ate a healing potion off Caelumn’s belt to heal Caelumn himself for 5HP. Terry ducked into his shell for AC23 with disadvantage on attacks against, fired magic missiles, and used his fighter Second Wind for 11HP. After the third owlbear fell, Caelumn (revived by Ruin’s potion-pour) attempted to bind one of the owlbear souls into the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring at second level slot — outside CR range — but the DM permitted a fourth-level slot attempt, which succeeded [11].

The party returned to camp. Hugo hilariously chopped down trees with axe-flying-rage to provide firewood (resulting in splinter-only sawdust). Caelumn cast Create Bonfire to maintain the fire. Terry cast the alarm spell as a ritual. Ruin healed himself with his subclass feature for shit damage (3d6 → 6). The DM (Nick) notably fell asleep mid-watch for a long stretch in real time; the players spent the off-time discussing builds (Terry’s Bladesinger plans, Caelumn’s possible Misty Step / Fey Touched feat, Hugo’s worry about late-game scaling). When Nick returned, he apologised; the party joke-claimed they had levelled up while he was asleep, but Nick walked it back: no level this session, but a milestone advance was implied by the three-owlbear kill.

Dialogue Highlights

  1. Thomas Feld: “Listen, friend, I appreciate the help, but you’re near Aurelion territory. Would keep the theatrics to a minimum if I was you. Or you might go missing.”
  2. Thomas Feld: “All I know is people with magic rarely make it. Unless you’re part of the church, I guess.”
  3. Thomas Feld (on Aurelia and the chromatic dragons): “I don’t quite like what they did with those dragons back in the day.”
  4. The eight-year-old (re: Ruin): “You scared the birds? They were louder before.”
  5. The eight-year-old (re: Hugo’s blue skin): “Why are you blue?”
  6. Thomas Feld (warning, in passing): “Just make sure if you camp tonight, remember to stay away from berry figgets. Big pigs live there, and they don’t share.”
  7. The Whisper Coil Emporium dwarf (Alston, on the experimental black potion): “I have no idea, but it can’t be good.”
  8. The Starpoint Secrets fairy (after Ruin’s theft attempt): “Just know that thieves… they get what’s coming to them” — pointing to a string of severed hands hung from the ceiling.
  9. Hugo (committing to Winged Boots use): “I told you I had a plan in mind, trust the process.”
  10. Caelumn (on the alleyway weather, having survived): “Well, this is rather curious indeed. Maybe it’s something that we need to ask when we get back to Umberfall.”
  11. Terry: “Apparently turtles are hermaphrodites. I don’t know enough about turtle breeding.”
  12. Terry (memorising the elements as a party trick): a multi-paragraph recital of every named chemical element. Out-of-character but in-table; not strictly canonical character knowledge.

NPCs

  1. Thomas Feld: orchard farmer on the road between Umbrafall and Eldwythe. Has a wife (Mara) and a chatty eight-year-old daughter (Lysa, per her mother). Friendly, suspicious of Aurelian authority, claims to have seen a dragon flying over toward Palathorn once. New this session: yes. Status: alive.
  2. The Felds’ eight-year-old daughter (Lysa per her mother): chatty and unguarded. New this session: yes.
  3. The Whisper Coil Emporium dwarf, Alston: name confirmed this session (“Feel free to give good old Alston a call”). Continues experimenting with potions. New this session (named): yes. Status: alive.
  4. Starpoint Secrets shopkeeper: fairy, shaved purple hair, pot belly, hands strung from the ceiling. Hostile after Ruin’s theft attempt. New this session: yes. Status: alive, irritated.
  5. The Glomangol Inn innkeeper: skinny, greasy, autonomously polishes glasses, family-recipe oats. Recommends Starpoint Secrets. New this session: yes (named only as “the innkeeper”).
  6. The rat-vendor woman: 70-80, sharp chin, sells freshly-caught rats and weasels. Sold Ruin two rats for 14 silver. New this session: yes. Status: alive (closed up shop and “hit it off” after the sale).
  7. Three owlbears: ambushed the party at the campsite. Killed two; soul of one captured in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring. New this session: yes. Status: 2 dead, 1 soul captive.

Locations

  1. The Glomangol Inn (or unnamed inn) breakfast room: porridge served by the autonomous-glass-polishing innkeeper. New this session: no (continued use).
  2. Starpoint Secrets: a Umbrafall potion shop near the inn; “crudely drawn star with a small glimmer over the very tippy top”. Run by the fairy. Hands hung from the ceiling. New this session: yes (named).
  3. Whisper Coil Emporium: the dwarf-run potion shop near (but not inside) the Black Hollow Market. The party had been here previously (s7); they returned. New this session: no.
  4. The road east out of Umbrafall: black stone gives way to dirt and forest, the bio-gloom fades, birdsong returns, the air clears. Connects UmbrafallEldwythe. New this session: yes (described in detail for the first time).
  5. Forest clearing campsite: where the owlbear ambush occurred, away from the road but apparently not far enough from the “berry figgets” the daughter warned about. New this session: yes.

Items & Loot

  1. Winged Boots (Hugo): used for the first time in combat, four hours of flight in 1-hour increments per the 2024 nerf. Used to airlift Caelumn out of the owlbear engagement.
  2. Cloak of Protection (Terry): acquired this session as Sevryn’s gift; +1 to AC and saves.
  3. Bloodwell Vial (Caelumn): from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything; on attunement, regains a sorcery point on cast and other features. New this session: added to inventory.
  4. 2 healing potions (purchased at Whisper Coil Emporium, 49gp each): added to party inventory.
  5. 1 black experimental potion (Whisper Coil Emporium gift, awaiting test): in Caelumn’s pack.
  6. 1 free healing potion (paid as bounty for Ruin’s paralysis trial): in party pool.
  7. 5 rations (Terry, 5sp each, 25 silver total): purchased at the inn.
  8. 2 raw rats on a stick (Ruin, 14 silver): consumed; Ruin used Prestidigitation to fake-cook them.
  9. One sack of apples (per s12, picked up later — none received in session 11).
  10. Owlbear corpses: butchered for jerky; one soul stored in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring for future summoning.
  11. Currency split: not formalised; healing potions and rations come out of party pool.

Combat Encounters

  • Three owlbears (~10 rounds): party state at start: full HP after long rest, Caelumn separated from camp by 120 feet, no Vasquez to frontline. Party state at end: Caelumn knocked unconscious twice (revived by Ruin’s potion-pour and Hugo’s airlift), Hugo bloodied (~35 HP of damage absorbed), Terry largely intact in shell stance, Ruin moderately bloodied (38 damage including Hellish Rebuke counter), one owlbear soul-captured.
    • Monsters: 3 owlbears (CR2-3 each, with claws for ~14-19 slashing per turn), bigger and beefier than the players expected.
    • To-hit vs party: heavy. Multiple 22-25s on Hugo, Caelumn, Ruin.
    • Saves: Dex 14 saves vs Caelumn’s level-2 Burning Hands — all three failed; Caelumn hit them for 27 damage each effectively (split 45 across 3, but with all-fail being half-damage on success).
    • Damage types: Slashing (claws); Caelumn dealt fire (Burning Hands at L2, then Chromatic Orb at L1 fire); Ruin dealt fire (Hellish Rebuke), force/Eldritch (Eldritch Blast), lightning (Witch Bolt); Hugo dealt slashing/force (his Void-Touched subclass dealt force damage on missed-attack-end-of-turn explosion); Terry dealt force/radiant (Magic Missile, hand crossbow + True Strike).
    • Party resources: Caelumn spent two 2nd-level slots (Burning Hands, attempted Dragon’s Breath which DM ruled was a concentration spell needing both bonus + action, then re-cast as Burning Hands at 2nd; Chromatic Orb at L1; Mirror Image; Shield ×3); Hugo activated Winged Boots for combat, raged twice; Ruin used Witch Bolt at 1st with the new buff, Hellish Rebuke, Eldritch Blast, Sacred Flame; Terry used Magic Missile (3 missiles, killed one owlbear), withdrew into shell, hand crossbow + True Strike, alarm ritual after combat.
    • Notable: Hugo’s airlift of Caelumn [9]; Caelumn’s owlbear-soul capture [12].

Clues & Foreshadowing

  1. Thomas Feld saw a dragon fly over once — direction northeast, toward Palathorn [13]. Source: Thomas Feld’s own anecdote. The party did not pursue this clue this session but it is on the record.
  2. Aurelian magic-suppression is regional, not just civic: even on the road approaching Aurelia from Umbrafall, farmers warn about being “missed” if you cast magic openly. Source: Thomas Feld.
  3. The “big pigs” at the berry figgets were never seen — the owlbears were the actual ambush, in different bushes. Possibly the daughter was warning about the owlbears under a child’s name, possibly there are also boars and the party simply got unlucky.
  4. Witch Bolt is buffed in the 2024 rules: deals damage on subsequent rounds even if the initial attack misses [10]. Tactical-relevant.
  5. The Soulbinder’s Packed Ring requires upcasting two slots higher than a creature’s CR for a guaranteed bind, with reduced chance at lower slots [14] + [15] confirms). Caelumn’s 4th-level slot succeeded on what appeared to be a CR3-equivalent owlbear.

Open Mysteries & Unanswered Questions

  1. The dragon Thomas Feld saw — was it Briochebane? Or something larger? (Per Sevryn’s quest, chromatic dragons are nearly extinct, so it would be remarkable to see anything in flight at all.)
  2. What is happening at Eldwythe? The party has heard nothing concrete from this session — only that they are heading there.
  3. Are the owlbears territorial migrants from Aurelia, wild fauna, or somehow connected to the party’s quest? No information given.
  4. Will the Whisper Coil Emporium black potion ever be tested? Caelumn pocketed it pending a target.

Quests

  1. [Status: active] Travel to Eldwythe: half a day’s walk away as of session end.
  2. [Status: active] Risa’s Sister Conspiracy: not progressed this session.
  3. [Status: active] The Egg Quest: not progressed; Egg Quest hunts chromatic dragons; Sevryn warned against full extinction.
  4. [Status: pending] Test the black potion (Alston’s request): pending a willing target.
  5. [Status: dormant] Hugo’s Devil Pact, Duskwatch Ledger: not progressed.

Faction & Relationship Changes

  • The party is now identifiably visible to anyone who paid attention to the Felds’ family — three obviously magical or non-human travellers escorted by a barbarian. They will be remembered if any Aurelian agent finds the family.
  • Ruin established a pattern of casual theft: tried to steal at Starpoint Secrets (failed, doubled prices), pickpocketed three apples from the Felds (paid five copper after the fact via Caelumn’s embarrassment). Mordane is leaning into the “charm with harmlessness” warning Sevryn sent.
  • Caelumn is now carrying a captive owlbear soul in the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring; the ring previously held Maelis Dirn’s soul.
  • Hugo has used his Winged Boots in combat — a major tactical asset for the rest of the campaign.

Table Rulings

  1. Witch Bolt (2024): confirmed at the table — bonus action on subsequent rounds deals automatic lightning damage to the target, even if the initial spell-attack roll missed [10].
  2. Dragon’s Breath as concentration: Caelumn attempted to cast Dragon’s Breath as Burning Hands; DM clarified Dragon’s Breath is concentration and requires bonus action + action to use the breath weapon, so cannot fully replace a single-action attack spell [16]. Caelumn re-cast as 2nd-level Burning Hands at -1d6 damage.
  3. Soulbinder’s Packed Ring at higher slot: a 2nd-level slot vs a CR3 creature was just barely outside the strict bind range, but the DM permitted a 4th-level slot attempt. The 4th-level slot succeeded [14].
  4. Pickup-and-fly of an unconscious ally: as long as the ally’s weight is within the carrier’s normal carrying capacity, picking them up uses 5 feet of movement (touch) and the carrier can fly with them. Hugo, plus 5 strength, easily carried Caelumn (65.5 lbs) [17].
  5. Reckless attack must be declared before the roll [18]. Going forward, Hugo will declare it as an automatic.
  6. Throwing a healing potion to an unconscious ally as a free item interaction: Ruin’s snatch of the potion off Caelumn’s belt was a free interaction, the heal cast was a bonus action via subclass [19]. Confirms the s10 ruling.

Callbacks

  • Maelis Dirn’s soul (s7) and Soulbinder’s Packed Ring: the ring now also holds an owlbear soul; Caelumn continues to carry it.
  • Aurelian Paladin (s10): mentioned in the in-session recap.
  • Mira Hale (s10): mentioned in the recap; the party still intends to investigate after Eldwythe.
  • Risa (s7, s8, s10): mentioned in the recap.
  • Jim’s Magic Missile (acquired earlier): Terry mentions it as the reason for his upcoming Conjure Minor Elementals build.
  • Sevryn’s magic-item handout: this is the resolution of the “we get one uncommon item each” gift announced last session.

Next Steps

  1. Travel half a day to Eldwythe.
  2. Find the dragon — Thomas Feld’s northeast sighting is a hint.
  3. Check on the assassination contract / Mira Hale lead before transit to Aurelia.
  4. Terry expects to hit the next level (Bladesinger pick) at the Eldwythe dragon encounter.
