Session 11 is the eleventh recorded session of the campaign. The party left Umbrafall for Eldwythe [16][60] and helped a family mend their broken handcart on the road; the father warned them to keep their magic out of sight near Aurelian territory [72] and to camp away from the “berry thickets” [23]. That night, in a clearing with no berry bushes near it, three owlbears attacked; Hugo flew the downed Caelumn out of reach on his Winged Boots [30], and Caelumn bound one owlbear’s soul into the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring with a second-level spell slot [31]. Vasquez’s player Polar could not join this session [15].

Recap heard at start of session

Hugo’s player Dylan recapped session 10 after the DM’s d4 picked him [11]. He covered Harvo’s pyre and Sevryn’s letter promising a new companion, meeting Ruin, Vasquez’s night-time talk with his demon, the Broker’s 100 gold and his assassination offer, the Dawn Mercy Clinic and Mira Hale’s removal to Dock 13, the Aurelian ambush and the magic-resistant armour, and the long rest at the inn [12]. Caelumn’s player corrected one slip: Risa’s sister had been taken, not killed [13]. The DM called it the party’s “first taste of Aurelian might” [14].

Executive Summary

A travel day that ended in a fight. With Vasquez absent [15], the party agreed to make for Eldwythe, where they believed the dragon was, before deciding anything about Aurelia [16][17], and to keep money per character from now on [18]. In Umbrafall, Ruin’s failed theft at Starpoint Secrets put the price of healing potions up [19], so they bought two at the Whisper Coil Emporium instead, where Ruin drank an experimental potion that paralysed him and left him with a level of exhaustion [20], and the dwarf Alston gave them a black potion to test on someone else [21]. On the road east they helped a family mend a broken handcart; the father warned them to keep their magic hidden so close to Aurelian territory and to avoid the berry thickets [22][23], and the DM told them the Aurelians and Vhal’Zarim had hunted the chromatic dragons almost to extinction [24]. At nightfall three owlbears caught Caelumn 120 feet from camp [25][26]. Terry killed one with Magic Missile [27] and Hugo the other two with thrown hand axes [28][29], after flying the downed Caelumn out of reach on his Winged Boots [30]. Caelumn then bound one owlbear’s soul into the Soulbinder’s Packed Ring with a second-level slot [31].

Narrative

With Vasquez absent (see Meta notes), the party woke at their inn in Umbrafall and agreed to head for Eldwythe, “where the dragon is”, before deciding anything about Aurelia [16]; Eldwythe lies between Aurelia and Umbrafall in any case [17], about two days’ walk away [32]. They also settled the money: the Broker’s 100 gold went 25 each to the four who had done the job, none to Ruin, and from now on money is kept per character, with the 120 gold already in the party pot left for rations and potions [33]. Terry summoned his owl familiar, Earthwing, again [34].

Breakfast was the innkeeper’s family-recipe oats, so dense that the spoon stood upright [35][36]. Caelumn paid 10 silver, forced the bowl down and, on a d100 roll of 44, came away with advantage on Constitution saves for 24 hours [37][38][39]. Terry bought five rations of nuts for 25 silver [40], and the innkeeper sent them to Starpoint Secrets for potions [41]. Outside, Ruin paid an old woman 14 silver for two freshly caught rats [42][43] and, since they were raw, warmed and flavoured them with Prestidigitation; they were still raw, but they tasted decent [44][45].

Starpoint Secrets, under a crudely drawn star, reeked of concentrated Biogloom, and its keeper was a fairy with shaved purple hair and a pot belly [46]. His potions of healing were 50 gold each [47]. While Caelumn haggled, Ruin tried to palm a red potion and was plainly seen [48]; the fairy pointed up at a string of severed hands of many races, said thieves “get what’s coming to them” [49], put his price up to 60 gold a potion [50] and showed them out [51].

Terry’s History check of 20 recalled the dwarf-run Whisper Coil Emporium near the Black Hollow Market, where they had bought potions before [52], and a walk of two to three hours took them there [53]. The dwarf offered a free healing potion to anyone who would drink an experimental blue one; Ruin did, could not move for about ten minutes, and was left with one level of exhaustion [20]. The promised potion went to Terry [54]. Caelumn turned down a second brew made from concentrated Biogloom [55] and bought two healing potions at 49 gold each, 98 in all, after refusing to sell some of his blood for a lower price [56]. The dwarf introduced himself as Alston, warned them off Aurelia and its strict churches [57], and handed over a black potion to try on someone else, though he did not know what it did [58]. Ruin then went down with food poisoning, which he cured with Lesser Restoration [59].

Leaving Umbrafall eastward around noon, they walked out of the black stone and the city’s glow into birdsong, and for the first time in days the air felt clean [9][60]. Ruin’s attempt to Fire Bolt a bird for lunch came to nothing [61]. Hugo admitted to mixed feelings, eager to fight a second dragon and sorry to leave home [62]. The DM explained that Umbrafall ends where the darkness ends, that Aurelian territory begins around Eldwythe, and that the land between is a no man’s land whose border Aurelia respects, “unless they’re doing some shady shit which they do tend to do quite a bit” [63].

Further on they found a handcart tipped beside the road with its grain spilled: a man straining at a wheel, a woman studying the axle, and a small girl humming on a sack of grain as she cut an apple [64]. The girl, about eight [65], asked whether they had scared the birds and gave them apple [66][67]; the family were taking grain to Eldwythe [68]. Caelumn’s natural 20 on Investigation found the axle cracked but repairable [69], and he helped the father bind it with metal until it held [70]. When Ruin shot a fat pigeon out of a tree with Fire Bolt [71], the father warned them that this close to Aurelian territory they should “keep the theatrics to a minimum” or they “might go missing” [72]: people with magic rarely make it there unless they belong to the church [73], and even Arcanthys, a floating city of wizards, had failed at that kind of defiance [74]. Asked what the Aurelians had done with the dragons, the DM told the party they would know that Aurelia and Vhal’Zarim together hunted the chromatic dragons almost to extinction, which is why the egg quest is so hard [75]. Hugo put his dragon-skull helmet away in his bag, though the DM thought people would take it for a fake [76]. The girl gave her name as Kit, met “Shelly McShoutface” (Ruin’s name for Terry), asked Hugo why he was blue, and heard Terry recite the chemical elements [77][78][79]. As they parted, the father told them to camp away from the “berry thickets”: “Big pigs live there, and they don’t share.” [23]. This family is not the orchard family of Thomas Feld whom the party meets in session 12: asked there whether the orchard girl was “the same girl that we met on the road”, the DM answered “No, different girl.” [80].

A couple of hours on, at sunset, they made camp in a clearing away from the road, with hardly a berry bush in sight [10][81]. While Terry set an alarm ward [82][83], Caelumn went for firewood with Terry’s owl, meaning to stay at the edge of the trees [84], but he ended up about 120 feet from camp [25], where two huge beasts were stalking him in the dark [85]. He had a torch, which made them wary but did not scare them off [86][87], and when he backed off towards camp they gave chase [88]; the owl, flying high, spotted a third [89][26].

The fight went badly from the start: the owlbears were “a lot beefier than you think” [90], and Ruin’s exhaustion put his rolls at minus two [91]. Caelumn disengaged and, since Dragon’s Breath would have taken his whole turn, cast a second-level Burning Hands as a bonus action that all three failed to dodge [92]; Hugo took to the air on his Winged Boots and threw hand axes from above [93]; and Terry’s second Magic Missile brought one owlbear down [27]. The other two mauled Ruin [94] and dropped Caelumn [95]. Hugo killed the owlbear chasing Ruin, swooped down, picked up Caelumn’s 65.5-pound body and flew back up to 20 feet [96][97], later setting him down beside Ruin [98]. Ruin snatched one of Caelumn’s healing potions as a free interaction and pocketed it, healing Caelumn for 5 with his bonus action instead [99], and Hugo, back on the ground, finished the last owlbear with two axe blows to the eyes [100].

Once initiative ended, Caelumn asked whether he could still bind a soul when Hugo had made the kill, and the DM said he could [101]. His second-level slot was two levels below the fourth-level slot the DM judged an owlbear needed, which gave him a 25% chance on a d4 [102], and the ring absorbed the soul of one owlbear [103]. Caelumn logged it on his sheet as “Pet Owlbear” [104].

Back at camp, Ruin carved the owlbears for meat and Hugo made jerky [105][106]. Asked once more for firewood, Hugo let his stored void energy explode among the trees and handed Caelumn a heap of splinters [107][108]; Caelumn lit the fire with Create Bonfire, and Terry’s owl kept it fed all night [109]. Caelumn expected the next level after the coming dragon fight [110], when Terry will take his Bladesinger subclass [111]. They set the watches, Caelumn first and Terry last [112], and the session ended there [113].

  2. Soulbinder’s Packed Ring: the bearer need not land the killing blow [101], and a slot two levels below the one a creature needs gives a 25% chance on a d4 [102].
