Session 10 opens at Harvo’s pyre, where a sealed letter from Sevryn admits he knew Harvo would not come back and announces a new ally, the tiefling Ruin, Mordane’s second character, who walks into the party’s camp that night asking for food [1][234]. On watch, Mharos appears to Vasquez as a smoking shadow and refuses any bargain: “There is no deal. There is only this.” [40][139]. Executive Summary

A letter from Sevryn appears beside Harvo’s pyre: he knew Harvo would die, calls it the cost of keeping the path open, warns of bigger sacrifices, and sends a tiefling, Ruin, who finds the party’s camp that night [1][17]. Narrative

The letter. As Harvo’s pyre burned low, a folded strip of vellum sealed with a single S appeared on a flat stone by the coals, with no footprints and no messenger [8]. Vasquez opened it and caught the scent of Sevryn’s first letter [27]. Sevryn wrote that he had known Harvo would not come back and sent him anyway; Harvo was the price of keeping the party’s path open, and bigger sacrifices lay ahead; if they wanted out, now was the time; and a tiefling named Ruin would meet them when they made camp [28]. Vasquez wondered how S knew where they were going when he did not [29]. They agreed to go back to the Broker for their pay first, two days’ walk [30].

Ruin. Hugo felt at home in the gloom of the fungal forest while the others sagged [31]. At the camp a tiefling slipped past them, though Hugo saw a shadow move, and walked in from behind asking for food [32]. Hugo crept behind him on a natural 20 and Vasquez pointed his blade at him [33]. Caelumn guessed “Ruin, I assume.” [34] and would not cook for him; Vasquez tossed him a tin of rations, warning “No mistake my kindness for weakness.” [35]. Ruin confirmed his name and said Sevryn had only sent him a letter, and he had no idea who that was [36][37]. Vasquez introduced himself: “Just Cruz will do fine.” [38]. Hugo chopped down a dry tree before Caelumn remembered Create Bonfire, and Ruin turned out to resist fire [39].

Mharos on watch. On Vasquez’s watch a shadow came round the camp, smoking, with burning red eyes, and Vasquez felt a connection to it [40]. It conjured a stone to sit on and told him it was more powerful than he imagined but needed a vessel on this plane [41]. Vasquez offered a partnership; it laughed at him, said it had fed on the misery of his old face, and promised that he would become “my terrible sword that sweeps across Eldurae” [42]. It promised agony “untold since the Ashfall years” [43], and vanished with a fanged smile [44]. The party woke rested, Vasquez a little sweaty [45].

The Broker. About five hours’ walk brought them into Umbrafall, which felt “like it never noticed you were gone” [46]. Ruin’s verdict: “what a shithole” [47]. Something in Vasquez was happy to be back [48]. The Broker barely looked up: “If you’re buying, speak. If not, don’t.” [48]. Hugo reported the miners dead, turned to ghosts by a succubus and the crystal’s energy, and explained the newcomer by “an unfortunate accident and someone lost their head in the mine” [49]; the Broker paid in full, 100 gold [50]. He offered a 200-gold assassination of a high political officer in Aurelia, to look like an accident, through a contact near the ports, and Hugo asked him to hold it [51][52]. On the clinic he knew nothing: to him it was charity work with nothing to trade [53]. For information, “no one knows more about Umbrafall than the rats” [54]: The Rat, an ordinary man turned spymaster and one of the city’s main powers, who uses beggars and children and makes contact only when he wants to [55].

Risa, the first time. On the way to the inn a begging child made something in Vasquez glad; he gave the child a whole ration and felt a searing pain behind his eyes, and smiled through it: “yeah I pissed you off real good didn’t I” [56]. At the inn Risa straightened when she saw them [57]. Caelumn told her the clinic seemed to be just a clinic and their only lead could not be found [58]. She had seen the log herself: “Did you even go to the clinic?” [59]. Then she slumped: “it’s been four days what have you been doing” [60]. So they went [61].

Drew. The clinic smelled of vinegar and herbs, its floors freshly scrubbed and its shelves half empty “like something has been removed in a hurry” [62]. Hugo’s Perception of 15 found a half-covered keg marked L-Y [63]. The orderly, Drew, sold no potions and could not say whether he had treated a woman like Risa’s sister; the party had never asked her name [64][65]. On a group Perception check Caelumn and Vasquez saw him sweating [66]. The voice in Vasquez wanted the man made to talk; when Vasquez folded his arms instead, he failed a Wisdom save and a cut opened on his arm: “don’t defy me mortal” [67]. Caelumn leaned over the counter with fire curling round his fingers [68] and rolled two natural 20s on Intimidation [69], “three nat 20s in a row” [70] by the DM’s count. Drew broke: Aurelians with papers had come for one patient, Mira Hale, because she had shown magical abilities [71]. They forced him to burn the records; he had tried to warn her sister, but the Nightwatch, paid off by the Aurelians, found out [72]. Mira had gone out in a barrel to Dock 13, on the east side of the city, four days ago, and would be in Aurelia by now [73]. Drew wet himself and ran [74][75].

What next. In the street Hugo argued for taking the assassination as a way into Aurelia to look for Mira once their business in Eldwythe was done; Caelumn feared they had left it too late and reminded him of the job they were meant to be doing [76]. Ruin admitted he had stopped listening [77]. They settled on telling the Broker they would take the contract and resting at the inn in case the Rat got in touch [78].

The ambush. On the way, Ruin and Vasquez noticed four men following them for four blocks, one in Aurelian armour [79][80]. As the crowd thinned, a dagger flew past Caelumn’s face [81]. A man with two daggers struck at Caelumn’s Shield and invited him to join the winning side, but Caelumn’s Wisdom save held [82]. Hugo lopped off one man’s arm and opened his belly, and Vasquez blew a hole in another’s femur with a fire charge [83]. Then the Aurelian Paladin stepped in with his greatsword: “you feel Mharos burn as you take four radiant damage” [84], and two hits put Vasquez down [85]. The radiant, the DM said, came from the Paladin being blessed by Aurelia [86]. Terry, his player silent, took the Dodge action [87]. Ruin healed Vasquez for 11 with a power he could not place, then killed the singed man with Shocking Grasp: “that’s how you do business” [88]. Caelumn’s Burning Hands scorched two at once [89], and Hugo cut the arm off the man who had stabbed him and buried his axe in his leg [90].

The Paladin falls. In the second round the Paladin’s cut glowed with radiant light, “burning the demon within you” [91], and dropped Vasquez again; he then hit Hugo for 14 slashing and 7 radiant [92]. Ruin’s Witch Bolt was turned by the Paladin’s armour, but under the 2024 rules its damage kept coming [93]. Caelumn’s twinned Chromatic Orb hit the Paladin and leapt to the other two men for 27 and 26, a platinum blast he did not understand himself [94]. The Paladin answered Hugo’s misses with a riposte, and Hugo’s void energy lashed back for 6 force [95]. Two more strikes left Hugo, who would not fall, on one hit point [96]. Ruin’s Eldritch Blast finished the Paladin, who looked to the heavens one last time [97], and Caelumn’s free Cure Wounds brought Vasquez back [98].

Spoils and the Broker. Hugo dragged the Paladin’s body the few blocks to the Broker [99][100]. The bodies yielded daggers, leather armour and coin, and the Paladin a greatsword and a heavy crossbow [101]. Terry remarked that Vasquez could have kept Cholmondeley’s armour [102], and Ruin and Vasquez argued over who had stood in the front line [103]. Told that the Aurelians had used Dock 13 to take people with magic, the Broker said he had heard such people go missing in Aurelia, and that Aurelians rarely came “messing around in the filth with the rest of us” [104]. The assassination was a rush job, two weeks at most, and Aurelia was a day away by boat or four days to a week on foot [105], so the party declined it [106][107]; Ruin, for one, did not want to go “waltzing into Aurelia” [108]. The Broker urged them to sell what they knew in Velkris, “the city of money” [109], asked after Hugo’s dragon skull [110], and offered a safe house at 500 gold a night, which they could not afford [111]. He would take the Paladin’s armour instead, but it was promised to Vasquez, and the sword was worth little: “But I do recognise a Enchanted Armor when I do see it.” [112].

Risa, the second time. With help, the plate came off in about ten minutes [113], “a set of suspiciously clean armor” [114]. They kept only the coin, and the greatsword and plate went to Vasquez to experiment with [115][116]. At the inn Risa was drinking to forget [117]. Hugo told her that her sister was alive but taken to Aurelia, for some kind of special programme [118]. “My sister’s dead, isn’t she?” [119]. No one could walk into Aurelia and find one person, she said [120]. She did not even know their names, and Hugo thought it safer that way [121]. Vasquez gave her his word that they would do their best, and that if things went south “the entire place goes up in flames” [122]; the voice in him said only “Pathetic.” [123]. It was, the DM said, like promising a twelve-year-old a cookie in thirty minutes: “He just wants misery now.” [124]. Risa took another drink and left [125].

The armour. In their room at the inn, five gold for the five of them [126], Ruin cast Identify on the plate; it resisted the spell, he made a Constitution save, and it was Nullstone armour [127]. Terry reckoned no one with magic would want to wear it, and Hugo’s player that it would block his rage [128][129]. The DM said no one in Aurelia is really magical; many are paladins with divine magic, but “even normal fighters have this on” [130]. It gives “advantage against saving throws against arcane spells” [131], does not block healing, and its power lies in “the rune work inside of the armor” [132]. Terry asked whether the runes could be copied into a tattoo, with ink ground from the armour, and the DM said “you could definitely try” [133]. Reshaping the whole suit would need a forge, eight hours and a flat roll, since Vasquez has no Arcana, with a chance of ruining it; Hugo suggested changing only the crest, which needed no roll [134]. Vasquez spent the end of his long rest on it: “However, it is still looking relatively Aurelian. You have changed the crest to look like your family crest.” [135]. The DM left the sharing of the mining gold to the players [136].
